A Message from our Director, René Baker


I hope you all have had a chance to spend time with family and relax in some way this summer. Since our last newsletter, my family and I had the opportunity to do just that when we visited friends and family in Maryland. I was eager to get back home to Utah; although, I do wish I could figure out how to access Maryland's seafood here.

Upon my return, I had the pleasure to meet with several families who had excellent questions and insights about MMA. Ms. Lana has been chosen to serve as MMA's Assistant Administrator!! We are thrilled for her to join the MMA leadership and support team. Ms. Lana is a credentialed Montessorian who brings 5 years of teaching experience and team leadership.

Staffing Updates

Ms. Joy will not be returning for the 2018-19 school year. We appreciate her contribution to MMA and wish her the best moving forward.

Ms. Martha will take Ms. Joy's former class and transition to be the lead teacher in early childhood. She is excited to put her summer learning from Westminster College's Montessori Institute into action for the 2018-19 school year.

Ms. Christina is coming to MMA from Indiana and will take over Ms. Lana's lower elementary class. Ms. Christina's is early childhood Montessori credentialed, has experience working in a public Montessori school, and looks forward to continuing her Montessori training into lower elementary.

This means that all of our teacher positions are once again filled! We are very proud of the level of Montessori trained individuals we have in our building. For the 2018-19 school year, every elementary classroom teacher is either Montessori credentialed or finishing up their Montessori programs. Out of our ten Junior High teachers, six are finishing up their Montessori program requirements this year.

We are in the process of hiring general education and special education teaching assistants as well as a front office administrative assistant. If you know anyone who would be a great candidate to work at our school, please have them email René at

Seeking Volunteers

MMA is participating in several community outreach events and we are seeking volunteers to help staff these events. Please contact the front office if you would like to volunteer - or 801-827-0150.

We would love your help as we walk the Pioneer Day parade route at 8:30am (after the children's parade and before the big parade) to pass out bags with MMA info inside.

We need volunteers to staff a booth at Ogden's National Night out on August 1st in the evening. You could educate people about MMA, pass out swag, share works, or run the plinko game.

We will be hosting another booth with swag, works, and games at the Harrisville Heritage Day on Saturday, August 4th.

Construction Update

Things are really coming together nicely as the construction on our addition nears completion. We have official occupancy of our new space, which means teachers can finally get in and start situating their new classrooms.

We have sprinklers, fencing, and grass! Furniture deliveries are arriving daily. North Ogden City is still working on installing the drainage pipe that runs the length of our property line. In the next few weeks our parking lot will be re-paved and our new, awesome playground equipment will ship.

The Montessori Academy Parent Association (MAPA) is the Parent-Teacher Organization for Maria Montessori Academy. This organization is used to facilitate communication and involvement between parents and teachers. MAPA is currently seeking volunteers who are interested in joining this organization to ensure that the needs of Maria Montessori Academy’s student body are being fulfilled.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

To celebrate the grand opening of MMA's addition, we are having a ribbon cutting ceremony. Join us at 5:15pm on Thursday, August 16th right before the Pool Party for the ceremony and tour.

Pool Party!

We can't wait to see everyone at MMA's annual back to school pool party. The party will follow the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at North Shore Aquatic Center from 6 until 8pm on Thursday, August 16th. Talk with your teachers, meet new friends, and swim your heart out.

Sneak a Peek

We know that it can be nerve racking to drop your child off at the curb on the first day of school, to honor the child's independence, and the Montessori period of normalization - especially for new parents. To provide an opportunity for everyone to ease into the school year and familiarize yourself with the building, your teacher(s), and drop off your school supplies - MMA is trying something new this year.

You are invited to our Sneak A Peak event on Monday, August 20th from 1:30-3:30pm. On the half hour, beginning at 1:30pm, then again at 2pm, 2:30pm, and 3pm - each teacher and assistant will greet families, give an overview of the classroom and expectations. There will be time for families to ask questions and meet each other.

There is no RSVP; just show up at a time that is most convenient for you. With four time slots, families with multiple children attending MMA have time to visit all their teachers. Please be on time and honor the half hour time frames to allow everyone an opportunity to visit.

Building Closure

The MMA building will be closed from Sunday, July 15th through Sunday, July 29th for deep cleaning. Staff are not allowed in the building during this time. Please plan accordingly.

Returning Student Registration

If you are a returning student and have indicated that you intend you child(ren) to return to MMA next year, but have not officially confirmed by accepting policies and procedures - you have received an email to guide you through this process.

To guarantee your spot at MMA and to allow teachers to best prepare the classroom for your child, please complete this last step in the process by the date indicated in the email.

Class lists

Class lists are finalized. Thank you for your patience as we placed more students this year than in years past as we moved from 8 upper elementary classrooms to 7 and 8 lower elementary classrooms to 9.

René will be emailing families next week to inform them of their 2018-19 teacher assignment. Teachers are encouraged to touch base with families before they return to school on August 14th but not required as we want to honor their summer break.

As was stated in my email last week, we are in the process of migrating our email into a new system. This process is not yet complete.
