Island School PTA Newsletter
Message from the Co-chairs
There is a welcome nip in the air & the festive season is around the corner. The upcoming Winter Fair on Saturday, 6th December is a great way to kick off the celebrations. It promises to be a lot of fun & we are looking forward to seeing you there.
The recent Quest week 2014 saw our children gaining invaluable experiences. From building houses in Cambodia, diving in the Philippines, river rafting in India, teaching children in Baiwan, to trekking in Nepal. The prefects all did a wonderful job in carrying out their responsibilities at various camps and learned how to effectively manage a team. It's leadership opportunities like these, which go a long way in contributing to the overall growth of our students. Thank you to the prefects, staff & teachers who have made sure that this Quest week was full of excitement, adventure, as well as being a huge success.
The children have added significantly to their academic knowledge & skill sets over the year. Many year groups are getting ready for their Mock Exams, internal assessments as well as SATs. We wish them all the very best!
Please email us if you would like to help out or get involved in the various PTA initiatives. Our wonderful Volunteers Coordinator - Deepali De Blank is looking forward to hearing from you.

The Student Directory 2014-2015 has been sent to the individual form rooms for distribution. Additional copies are available for sale from the Uniform Shop at a cost of $100.

Sales of the Christmas Cards and Cookbook go towards funding equipment and projects for Island School, as well as to the Nicola Myers and Kenneth McBride Memorial Fund to help local Hong Kong students finish their sixth form education.
We need volunteers on a daily basis to help out in the bookshop. Please notify Sandra, firstname.lastname@example.org or Christine, email@example.com, in the PTA office if you are available to help out for a few hours a month. It doesn’t have to be a regular commitment; it can simply be when you find you have some free time. Fathers are especially welcome.

PTA minutes - 10 November 2014
There is much excitement about the fair on December 6th. We are still looking for additional parent volunteers to help with some of the stalls, so please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you can help.
The Y10 coffee morning is being rescheduled from January 26th to the new date of February 26th.
The school is setting up a committee to guide charitable work and to streamline and rationalize the various charitable activities that happen at school. There is also a plan to raise awareness amongst students about this so that they can make more informed choices about which charities they choose to support.
Many parents have been understandably concerned about the school bus schedule and the school has been working hard to try to resolve this.
The PTA student directory will shortly be published and made available.
Date of next meeting is Monday 1st December
Highlights from the Principal’s report include:
· Normal finish time for school has resumed and activities are back to normal
· With a few exceptions, Quest week had been very successful with positive feedback received from students and teachers
· The school has worked hard with the facilities team at ESF to ensure the on-going safety and has issued a letter to parents describing actions taken
· There have been some changes on the school council. Chris thanked Malcolm Gibson, the outgoing chair, for his extremely valuable contributions and noted that he will continue to serve on one of the subcommittees that deal with redevelopment. The new incoming chair is Robert Gibson (no relation)
· Options meetings for Y8 and Y9 had been well received, and the same format is planned for Y11 options
· There is a meeting on November 25th to discuss the redevelopment. All parents are welcome
· Additionally there will be information available at the school fair to answer questions about redevelopment (look for the info booth near the bar!)
