Deer Families
Deer Hill School News . January 28, 2022
Dear Deer Hill Families,
This may be the earliest newsletter yet! I am out of the building today and tomorrow this week and so wanted to make sure to share our newsletter beforehand. I'll admit that it's short and sweet. It looks like it may be a snowy weekend. Stay safe and warm!
All the best,
Alexandra L. Sullivan
Principal, Deer Hill School
P.S. Our next newsletter will be published on February 11, 2022.

Need to Knows
- I've had a couple of families reach out with questions about what factors determine whether we hold indoor or outdoor recess. Much goes into this decision, and we are in line with other districts in the South Shore. In a nutshell, if the feels like temperature is 20 degrees or above, we go outside, assuming there isn't heavy precipitation. We also reference this chart which is also used by multiple districts in the area. Wind chill and other factors can impact the feels like temperature vs what the actual temperature reads. Please know that our goal is to have students outside as often as possible -- we have indoor recess only when we must. For this reason, thank you for ensuring that your children are properly dressed for the weather.
- MCAS will take place at Deer Hill in April and May of this year. Please see the dates that have been added to the Deer Hill calendar and make every effort ensure your child's attendance at school. On February 2 (date change) and 4, students will participate in an infrastructure trial which tests our IT structures for this computer-based assessment. Students will have multiple opportunities in their classrooms and technology classes to familiarize themselves with the MCAS format. MCAS resources for home are also available on the Deer Hill website under the Student Resources tab.
Keeping the Joy (happenings at Deer Hill)
- Mrs. Moser's class was so excited to welcome a virtual visitor from Vietnam. Colby Colleary's Mommy Huong spoke to the class about Tet/Lunar New Year which tied into the 4th grade reading of Year of the Dog. Additionally, students learned about time zones, geography, simple Vietnamese phrases, and even currency exchanges. There were many curricular tie-ins to this global visit!
- Deer Hill is so grateful to be the recipient of a grant from the South Shore Music Circus in the amount of $750. We will use this grant to offset the cost of one of our PSO enrichment assembles -- this year we're fortunate that Theatre Espresso will be in person for two 5th grade social studies plays, but they're more expensive than budgeted because of two showings for each due to their social distancing requirements. Thank you, Music Circus!
