Creativity and Critical Thinking

Strategies to Encourage Creativity in the Classroom

  1. Create a classroom environment that fosters discussion and is a safe place for students to express their ideas
  2. Work to connect learning to real life experiences as often as possible
  3. Use appropriate and innovative technology
  4. Give opportunities for students to take ownership of their learning
  5. Allow students to collaborate in learning as well as in teaching of new material

Strategies to Develop Critical Thinking

  • Ask higher-level thinking questions as often as possible
  • Give students group assignments designed to problem solve
  • Encourage self-assessment periodically throughout the lesson
  • Do not provide solutions to some problems; have students come up with and defend their own answers
  • Allow students to brainstorm prior to learning new information
