Meet your Renewal Consultant!

My name is Dr. Shaunda Cooper, affectionately known as Coop. The name was given to me by cool colleagues and somehow it just stuck lol! I am a native of Raleigh, NC and I absolutely love to travel. You say "let's" and I say "go".

In life I have many passions, but one very dear to my heart is providing youth with opportunities that open their minds to greater possibilities and fairness for all people. Five years ago, I founded a public non-profit for young girls ages 12-18 called Incredible Ladies United! This non-profit was formed for the purpose of social development, love of self, and love of others. This past year we were able to provide a scholarship to a very hard-working and community service oriented young lady; we hope to do the same this year but bigger and better! Keep an eye out for fundraising opportunities in the spring of each year!

The Renewal Process

The Renewal process is designed to provide charter schools, The Charter School Advisory Board, State Board of Education, General Assembly, and the public with specific and relevant information regarding charter school performance in academics, operations, and finances.

Meet Mr. Joshua Morgan, Director of Shining Rock Classical Academy: CFA

So, believe it or not, I am not writing about Mr. Morgan because he is the leader of a North Carolina charter school. I am writing to reflect on a time when great humility and kindness was shown towards me.

The Renewal process can be stressful for all stakeholders because there is a lot at stake. Trust me, as the consultant the pressure is on as well. After receiving correspondence from Mr. Morgan, we found that there was an error is printing. He could have chosen to go either direction with the conversation. However, Joshua chose to show humility in his approach to the error and kindly waited for the response and correction. Joshua had no idea the hectic morning I encountered prior to interacting with him. He had no idea that I had been running from my cubicle to the printer waiting for printouts for at least an hour before our encounter. Somehow after our call, I felt better as a person, not just a consultant.

Why did I feel the need to write about this experience? I cannot stress enough the importance of treating people with kindness and showing humility in even the smallest windows of opportunity. You never know if your ten minutes of kindness is the highlight of someone's twenty-four hour day. Be the person to add and not take away from the positiveness of another person's daily walk.

Let's make an effort to be kind. After all, kindness is free. Thank you Mr. Morgan.

A Must Read Message from Dave to charter Leaders

DPI Senior Leadership, along with the Office of Charter Schools, will be conducting a conference call each Thursday at 12:00 p.m.for all charter school Principals and Directors. The purpose of this call is to inform our schools of the latest information and to answer any questions you may have. The call-in information is below:

Beginning Thursday, March 19, Dr. Emory and Dr. Stegall will hold a standing Zoom meeting for charter and lab school leaders every Thursday at 12:00 p.m. The calls will be limited to 30 minutes, less if possible. We heard your request to have a more private line to facilitate efficient and targeted communication for the issues most impacting charter and lab schools.

As a result, the following channel has been created specifically for this purpose. In order to keep this channel private, we caution you not to share this link. The same link will be used weekly, unless compromised. To foster comprehensive district and agency-wide understanding of the critical issues in your schools, select NCDPI division directors and regional case managers will be invited to join these calls.

Join Zoom Meeting (Link information has been provided to you through an email dated March 19, 2020)

It is imperative that all charter leaders participate in these weekly calls. Also, please read all emails that come from DPI and the Office of Charter Schools as this situation is changing rapidly.

I want to thank you for your hard work providing leadership to your charter school community.

Please do not hesitate to email or call me if I can assist you in any way.

Although it has only been open for two and a half years, Peak Charter Academy was named “Best Public School,” and its Principal, Steve Pond, “Best Elementary Principal,” for both 2018-19 and 2019-2020 by Cary Magazine. After initially earning a “B” and meeting state growth expectations in its inaugural year, Peak’s scholars and staff earned an “A” and "exceeded growth” in 2018-2019, ranking Peak Charter Academy in the top tier of all public schools across the state. Additionally, Peak was named the region’s “Most Loved Charter School” by Hulafrog.com in 2019.

Peak Charter Academy serves a fast growing and incredibly diverse population whose families come from 39 different countries, speak 25 different languages, and live in five different counties throughout the Triangle. As a National Heritage Academies partner school, Peak Charter Academy is guided by its commitment to academic excellence, parent partnership, student responsibility, and its Moral Focus virtues, which are taught at a scheduled time each day through engaging activities, book studies, and service learning (“Peak Cares”) experiences each month.

Peak Charter Academy’s academic successes are rooted in its commitment to engaging all scholars through its unique blend of differentiated, tiered, and workshop-based instruction, practices which its Principal, Steve Pond, has championed for over 15 years, and has presented about on the local, state, and national levels. Peak’s commitment to the academic, social, and emotional wellness of its community (“The Peak Triangle”) allows scholars to receive the support and reinforcement needed to achieve when they may struggle, and the challenge and enrichment needed to sustain the successes they have already experienced. Peak Charter Academy scholars are engaged for growth, rather than proficiency, a focus that has allowed its students and staff to excel and sustain success in their early years.
