A Note from the Principal...
Dear Brentwood Families,
As we near the end of our school year, I would like to honor two teachers that will be leaving Brentwood to move onto other ventures within our school district.
Nakia Slone, who has taught 5th grade for 4 years at Brentwood, will be leaving to teach 6th grade math at PCMS next year. Nakia has encouraged & challenged all of her 5th grade students to strive to do their very best in all they do. We will miss her and we wish Nakia and her family (husband Kevin, daughters-Ashton & Alyssa, dog-Winnie and cat-Gordo) well as she embarks on this new journey.
Natalie Honegger has taught art at Brentwood for 9 years. She has inspired and encouraged children of all ages to develop their creativity through art. She will be teaching art at PCMS and she will be deeply missed by students and colleagues alike. We wish Natalie and family (husband Isaac, daughter Amelia, cats- Vincent and Jafar) well. Thank you both for your service to our children at Brentwood and best wishes!
I would also like to recognize the members of our PTO board that will be “retiring” as officers this year. Thank you to Andi Solero (our President for 9 years), Rochelle Clark-Vice President, Kay York-Financial Secretary, Andrea Hapenny-Box Tops and Katherine Broadstreet-Market Day. Your service is appreciated and our staff and students appreciate all that you have done for us!
Thank you!
Ms. Vamos

Brentwood is Recognized as Four Star School by Department of Education for 2013-2014
The Indiana Department of Education released their list of 2013-2014 Four Star Schools - and Brentwood Elementary is once again represents Plainfield Schools on this list! This year the list is comprised out of 281 out of 2,068 eligible schools in Indiana.
The eligibility to make Four Star requires that a school be in the 75th percentile or above in two calculations:
1. the combined percentage of students in each grade passing the ISTEP English and Math tests;
2. percentage of individual students in each grade that passed both tests.
Each grade is calculated separately and the school must meet the 75th percentile in both categories in all grades tested.
Additionally, a qualifying school must have earned an "A" in the state's accountability system and be accredited by the Indiana Department of Education.

Mrs. Napier, Jennifer's long-time colleague and friend wrote the following: It has been a privilege to teach 4th grade with Jennifer for the last 10 years! She is a team player who is always willing to share new ideas and collaborate on projects. Jennifer works hard to make sure all of her students succeed. I love being able to teach every day with such a great friend!
Fellow 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Barker had the following words to say about her friend, "Jennifer is a great teammate and wonderful friend. I have learned a lot from her both from a teaching stand point and as a wife, mother, and Christian. She puts her heart into everything she does."
Mrs. Gray grew up in Plainfield and feels fortunate she is able to teacher here! "When I taught at Clarks Creek Elementary I got to teach with my former 4th and 5th grade teachers!" She graduate from Ball State University in 2004 and received her Masters Degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2008.

What do you enjoy doing when you aren't teaching?
"I enjoy being with my family and my two sons (Isaiah-6 going to be in 1st grade at Brentwood and Andrew-4 preschool at PCC and Clarks Creek) playing outside or playing games, riding bikes, stamping cards, and reading."
Where is the most interesting place you have been?
Mrs. Gray shared some of her favorite memories with us: "I really enjoy seeing a child develop a love for reading. Reading is my favorite subject to teach. I really enjoy helping a student be motivated to find books they love and to watch their excitement. Also, it has been encouraging to help students build confidence and self-esteem through relationships. Helping students to find success in improved behavior and grades are my best memories."
As a parent and teacher, what advice do you have for parents on how they can be involved in their child’s education?
"Making time for our children is so important. Taking the time to truly listen to them and spend quality time together. Read your teacher’s newsletter together and discuss what is going on in the classroom. Take the time to make attainable goals together. Read together each night and let your child see you reading. Volunteer in the classroom if you can. The students always love working with another parent."
Ending Note from Mrs. Gray: "I have really enjoyed having my son, Isaiah, here at Brentwood in kindergarten with me this year. We are so blessed to have such wonderful teachers at Brentwood!"
4th Graders Dissect Owl Pellets
Students had the opportunity to dissect owl pellets to help them discover what role an owl plays in the ecosystem by dissecting an owl pellet. Students should be able to discover if the owl is a producer or a consumer. They should be able to describe the niche of an owl. Students should be able to create a food web with the barn owl at the highest trophic level.

Transportation & Dismissal Info
All car riders arriving in the morning should be dropped off in our car rider lane NOT in our Visitor Parking lot. This ensures they are not crossing over any traffic. If you child is being dropped off late an adult must come into the office with them to sign them in.
If your child rides the bus to school and will be eating breakfast in the cafeteria please talk to them about going straight to the cafeteria to get their breakfast. This will give them the most time to eat a healthy breakfast possible.
Dismissal Changes:
- If you need to change your child's dismissal instructions the best way to do this is to send a signed note into your child's teacher.
- If this is impossible please call the office NO LATER THAN 3:00 p.m. to ensure the dismissal change gets to your child's teacher in a timely matter.
Transportation:
If you are permanently changing how your child goes home or if you move please notify our office at 317-839-4802, as well as Transportation at 317-838-3632, and submit a new Transportation Form to the office.
