Franklin County 4-H News - September 15, 2023
4-H Community Service Opportunity Available
The Columbus Italian Festival Parade has invited "Franklin County 4-H" to have an entry in their parade. 4-H project members (3rd grade, or 9 years and older) can wear their 4-H club shirts or choose to wear a family-friendly clown outfit. 4-H members who have completed PetPALS and who have an animal that would enjoy a parade atmosphere are also welcome. The goal is to promote 4-H and bring a smile to the faces of those watching the parade.
The Parade is on Sunday, October 8th. Line up starts at 12 noon and the parade starts at 1:00 pm.
- Line-up: 12:00 p.m. Dennison between Poplar & Buttles (Use 660 Neil Ave Columbus, OH 43215 for mapping to line-up)
- Parade Route: E on Buttles Ave to N on High Street (Bands stationary performance spot - the whole parade to stop while they are performing) to E on Warren to end at 4th St. There is free parking at Columbus Community College and there is a free shuttle to the Festival from the Columbus Community College Parking.
- 4-H Advisor, Jennifer Clingman, has volunteered to oversee this effort. If you would like to participate, please sign up by September 25.
- The parade theme is “Volunteer Services for Mankind”.

September 4-H Council Meeting
This meeting will be a review of the fair as well as final preparations for the upcoming recognition program.
Note that each club has a vote at 4-H Council meetings. Please make sure your club is represented.
2024 Franklin County 4-H Camp Counselors
Applications are now available for 4-H teen camp counselors at this year's 4-H camp, June 13-17, 2024. The process will also require a club advisor form regarding your club involvement, reference checks, along with an interview.
**There are a limited number of positions**
Due to the success of the program (camp) and the large number of applications, not everyone who completes the application process will receive a position.
Requirements: youth who are 14 years old by camp can apply (preference for those age 14 by 1/1/24). Applicants should have:
- good attendance with their 4-H Club
- demonstrate their attention to deadlines at the club level
- completed a 4-H project in 2023
- if they have attended camp, but aren't a 4-H member, they need to have contacted a club and have plans for club membership in 2024
Expectations - Counselor Applicants should:
- prioritize camp meetings in their schedule
- new counselors should plan to attend 30-40 hours of training/meetings
- returning counselors need to have a minimum of 24 hours of training/meetings
- fully participate in the activities at meetings and to attend Camp Counselor Workshop (weekend in April)
- practice camp songs, games, dances
- be actively involved in planning one evening recreation at camp and help lead classes
- plan to attend camp in its entirety including set-up and clean-up (June 13-17, 2024)
- and much more that will be shared and discussed with applicants and their parents at orientation

Franklin County 4-H Fashion Board Applications
They meet monthly (January - July), often on Sunday afternoons in Hilliard but have also planned other dates/times when attending field trips and exhibits.
Requirements: Open to 4-H clothing members (with at least one year of construction experience) who are at least 12 years of age (by 1/1/24)! The board is looking for bright, motivated 4-H'ers who want to learn more about clothing and textiles.
Expectations:
- help with a station at the Winter Project Fair
- help plan and conduct a county sewing workshop
- organize at least one event for Franklin County clothing participants
- read the fair fashion review narration cards
- assist with various activities surrounding the judging and the fashion review

Franklin County 4-H Teen Leaders Council
Youth, ages 13 and older (as of 1/1/24), are Invited to apply to be on the Franklin County Teen Leaders Council for 2024. Applicants must be at least in the seventh grade. Meetings will mostly be held on the 4th or 5th Tuesday of every month from 6:30-8:30pm.
The Teen Leaders Council is a Franklin County 4-H club that focuses on preparing teens to be caring and contributing leaders through educational and leadership opportunities. Other opportunities will include fun outings and service-learning projects.

Honor Club & Helping Hands Club Awards
The Helping Hands Community Service Award is an opportunity for 4-H Clubs to share how they have made a difference in their local communities this year. The Helping Hands Award Application can be found here.
The Honor Club Award is an opportunity for 4-H Clubs to apply for recognition for completing the 4-H year while going above and beyond the minimum club requirements. The online Honor Club application can be found here.
4-H Volunteer/Club Advisor Orientaion
Are you or someone you know interested in becoming a 4-H Volunteer and helping a 4-H Club? 4-H Advisors must be screened Ohio 4-H Volunteers. This process takes several steps. One of which is to attend an orientation. Two are currently scheduled for the 2023-2024 4-H year.
