CARLSON COURIER
Home of the Champions
Hello Champions,
I hope you are having a great weekend and were able to spend some time outside enjoying this beautiful weather. Now, is it too much to ask to get through the next 6 weeks without any triple digits (I knocked on wood, just in case). Anyhow this past week, like all of them since February, flew by. A big shout out to our 5th graders, including our COA students, who came back after the previous week's AzM2 testing to slay the AZSCI assessment. So, that's a wrap for state testing this year. Thanks again for all your help making this a success. No matter the results, we are just grateful that we were able to be here and get it done successfully. The results for AzM2 are projected to be available in early summer (June) which means we will send them out to you when we return in July. AZSCI will not be sending us any results as it was a field test. However, next year when students take the test they will be given results. Also, last week we met with our PTO to review this year's activity and prepare for board elections next month. On behalf of the Carlson staff, we can't thank you enough for all of your generous support this year. Our PTO is positioned to pick up where we left off before the pandemic and provide some exciting events for students once safety restrictions ease.
Speaking of easing restrictions. I am happy to report that students playing within their grade levels at recess and not being restricted to zones has gone very well. Students have more opportunities now to make new friends and play different games of their choice. Also, students haven't been required to wear masks when they are outside playing unless they are congregating in close proximity, then we needed them to either space out or put their mask on and were using the six foot mandate. Recently, we have reminded students of this and are encouraging them to use this time as a mask break, especially as it gets warmer. We are now operating under a three feet guideline for social distancing when students are outside and unmasked.
As we get new guidance I will keep you updated. The next topic to be addressed from a district level will be all of the end of year type celebrations. For us, that is usually our Kinders and 6th graders that participate in these celebrations and will be impacted.
Coming up this week we have just a couple of things on the calendar to be mindful of. On Tuesday we are receiving 90 new Chromebooks for student use (see below for technology update). On Wednesday all permission slips for the virtual talent show are due. You can reach out to Mrs. Trafficante or Malizia for more information. Auditions will be held on Wednesday, April 28th in the music room during the school day. Then on Friday, we will have our last Fun Friday for this year. If you didn't get a season pass, you can send your student with $4 on Friday. We will have two ice cream trucks in the afternoon for students to enjoy an ice cold treat.
Thank you for your continued support this year, I know it's been a long one and we're getting close to the end and hopefully the end of the pandemic as well. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and see you tomorrow.

Campus Updates & Reminders
Virtual Talent Show
April 21st is the deadline to turn in your permission slips to be considered for auditions. All auditions will be held during the school day on April 28th.
Yearbook Orders
There's still time to place an order for yearbooks. Please email Mrs. Benfield at moralesbenfield.mercedes@cusd80.com to get your’s reserved. The cost is $25 and will be processed using Infinite Campus. The books should be delivered to us on May 3.
Technology Upgrade
We are upgrading our technology at Carlson. After this year and everything Google Classroom did to improve our instructional efficiency and a generous donation from one of our Champion families, we purchased 60 new Chromebooks to replace our aging legacy inventory. Then, our district informed us that an additional 120 new Chromebooks were on its way to Carlson. So, since July, we've added 150 brand new iPads with keyboards, 180 Chromebooks and have funding set aside to purchase even more. When you combine this with our existing technology we will be approaching a 1:1 device to student ratio very soon.

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)
PTO is busy planning for Teacher Appreciation Week which will be held the week of May 3rd. We know this fun filled week will be here before we know it so our planning is underway! Our Carlson teachers have worked very hard and this year PTO would like to shower our hard working teachers with the "gift of giving." Each day during Teacher Appreciation week we will be holding a drawing where teachers can win a gift card. To help make this gift card drawing a success where all teachers are gifted at least one gift card we are asking for the support of our Carlson Families. PTO is looking for donations of gift cards of all kinds! If you would like to donate a gift card (any value and any venue) please send in the gift card in a sealed envelope labeled "PTO". Teachers will turn in the sealed envelopes to PTO. We are asking for all donations to be sent in by Thursday, April 22nd. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to a successful Teacher Appreciation week! If you have any questions please contact the PTO President at katie@carlsonpto.com
