What is the Homestead Act?

Today May 20, 1862, President Lincoln signed into law. Anyone who had ever taken up arms against the U.S. governement, is 21 or older, of the head of a family can sign an application to claim a fredral land grant.

Homestead Act Information

Opens in the western part of the United States. 160 acres of free land including freed slaves. By the end of the Civil War there should be around 15,000 homestead claims. It will remain in affect for about 100 years. They can live on the land for about 5 years.
