Rumors??
On Wednesday, a student called 911 accidently when the "Emergency Call" button was pressed on their new Apple Watch(I've called 911 accidently before while walking my dogs - so I know it can happen). The teacher came to Mrs. Walker and I and told us what happened, so we were not surprised if the police called or came by. LVPD came to the school Thursday morning to follow up, and they asked if they could walk around the campus to make sure everything was okay. They walked around, stopped and chatted with a few classrooms and talked to the student who had made the call. They determined that all was clear so we said "Thank you!" and they left.
And then...the stories started. Later in the morning, a group of 6th grade girls came to the office very upset because they had heard there was "going to be a school shooting at the pep rally". I asked the student where they had gotten their information from and another group of students told them, "The police told a teacher there was going to be a school shooting." I asked the kids, "Does that make sense that the police would say that?" We talked through the issue with those kids and we did our best to reassure them and answer all their questions. We addressed the rumors at lunch, as well as individual classrooms that were struggling because of the rumors.
I asked some of the children who were most upset if they would feel better if LVPD would attend our pep rally, and they were glad to come by.
So that was our day on Thursday! I stressed this to our students and I would like to stress the same thing to our parents - student safety is our #1 priority. When this situation was brought to our attention, we investigated promptly and determined there was no actual threat to our students. If an actual threat is discovered, we will make sure to contact parents and keep everyone informed.
Also, please talk to your students about what they should do if there are troubling reports at school. Instead of going into the bathroom and calling/texting home, they need to tell an adult here on campus so we can take the appropriate action.
I wanted to share the happenings from that day so we could all be on the same page, and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call or email me. eric_holt@lagovista.txed.net or 512-267-8300 Ext. 2500

Meet Our Staff! All of our teachers at LVMS are amazing and we want you to get to know them a little bit better! Each week we will interview two staff members with some basic questions as well as some questions that were requested by students.
Terri Harkins, Nurse/Attendance Secretary/Librarian
Where are you originally from? I am a fifth generation Texan. I was born in a small town in West Texas and I have lived in East Texas, North Texas, South Texas and now Central Texas.
What led you to want to work in schools? How long have you been in education? I really did not plan to work in education. My degree is in nursing but almost every job I had outside of the hospital pushed me in this direction. I found that I really enjoyed working with young people and I still do. This is my 22nd year working for LVISD. I not only know the students but I also had a lot of their parents in school as well.
Tell us about your family. I have been married for 38 years and I have 2 grown children. My first grandchild will be 1 year old in a couple of weeks and I love to spend time with him. Our family is very close and we spend a lot of time together at the lake, watching NFL football or just hanging out.
What are your favorite hobbies? I love to garden and work in my yard but right now all of my attention and energy is going towards finishing my house. My husband and I have been working on this remodel for a long time and we are getting very close to finishing it. I can’t wait….
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you want to go? Anywhere tropical! After all, I used to be a mermaid.
What sport do you enjoy the most? NFL Football. My whole family is playing playing fantasy football and it is a blast.
What is your favorite food? Tex-Mex
Who inspires you and why? My dad inspires me. He is almost 90 years old and still gets up and go to work every day. He is an auctioneer and has an antique store. He gives up most of his income to help others. He inspires me to be a better person.
Jason Hergenreder, 7th/8th Grade Math Teacher
Where are you originally from? I am from Camarillo CA.
What led you to want to work in schools? How long have you been in education? I have been teaching for a real long time. I decided to get into teaching so I could coach football.
Tell us about your family. I have a beautiful wife Melissa with two wonderful children Jaelyn and Pierce who are both just like their Dad.
What are your favorite hobbies? My favorite things to do when not working would include playing poker, golf, and going to the lake.
Where is your favorite place to travel? My favorite place to visit is Las Vegas. A chance to enjoy some relaxation and fun all together.
What is your favorite food? Food is not a big deal to me and I don't think about what my next meal should be. I will eat a turkey sandwich everyday of my life if I had to.
Why did you want to work in Lago Vista? I choose LV because I want to be as close to my family as possible. Coaching pulls us away from our families a bit so being close to them is what I have always wanted.
What do you like about Math? I like Math because I am good at it and I have a way of explaining it that I believe most of my students are able to comprehend and master.
