Power of the Pen
On Saturday, February 9, Saint Paschal Baylon School's Power of the Pen competitive writing team members traveled to University School for the district tournament and wrote for three 40 minute rounds of writing. Mrs. Connors and Ms. Raguz accompanied the team and served as writing judges as well. Approximately 155 writers from the northeastern region of Ohio competed. The following students were proud representatives for Saint Paschal Baylon School:
Gr. 8:
Eleanor Fleming
Macey Israel
Peter Karim
Samantha Mailer
Clare Valenza
Samantha Werbeck
Gr. 7
Anna Grossner
Lily Jarc
Zoltan Kotrebai
Anai McKinney
Colin Mooney
Corinne Sutton
Many of the students achieved #1 rankings for their works and look forward to hearing who will advance to the regional level of competition. One of the eighth graders, in particular, had a stellar performance. Samantha Mailer received #1 rankings for all of her rounds of writing. One of those pieces earned her the privilege of being one of the first recipients of the new Chi Waggoner Excellence in Writing Award, which is given to the top three papers on a grade level for the tournament that day. It is no surprise that Samantha brought home the 1st Place Trophy for Gr. 8 writers at the Power of the Pen District Tournament. The ability to conjure up a story on demand is a challenging but fulfilling one for these students, and we commend them on their creative achievements.

From the Pastor's Perspective...News from Father Lane, SSS
Forward in Faith, Hope & Love: We are over 20% of our goal! Please make your family’s commitment today! We are counting on every one who is part of the SPB family – personal, organizational, staff & volunteers – to all make their witness to improve our wonderful parish facilities! Share your blessings and sacrifices to our capital campaign for driveways and parking lots! Help us achieve our one million dollar goal! I am grateful for our students for doing their part these past two weeks, bringing in their change and "pennies for the parking lot."
More Testimonies About Giving to the Capital Campaign:· We are so grateful to have a place to work and worship. Thank you for the gifts of grace that you have given to the Peko family. Saint Paschal has transformed our lives in so many ways and we would not be in the position we are without you and this parish. I wish that we could give more to fix the parking lot. It’s interesting to think that something as simple as having a place to park is such a blessing. Thank you for all of the sacrifices that you have made for us and the parish. I know that serving the people of the parish and the staff is not always easy and we are very fortunate to have you working so hard for us. I hope that we raise enough to maintain our home away from home, and that we are here continuing to serve and minister to God and each other for many more years to come. God bless you for your patience, dedication, and endurance. - Anna & George Peko
· I was so moved to see our school children give their “pennies,” cash and enthusiasm to the capital campaign. They want their playground, their parking lot to be safe, fun and a place for others to enjoy too. Their infectious joy is making me want to donate, even though it’s hard for me right now with my retirement needs. This campaign is for the young people and their safety. I am so happy I realized the need of giving to make SPB and its legacy stronger! - Anonymous
Most of our generous donors want to be anonymous in this campaign – they do not wish to be acknowledged, have their name on a plaque or the parking lot. As many of said – here in a summary: “Put the money to the lot and not to recognition SPB needs all the help it can get to get this project done quickly for the safety of our children and elderly.”
THANK YOU FOR HELPING US TOWARD OUR GOAL: Each family is asked for a $500 commitment.... more if able, or something to support the project. No matter what you donate, it's from your loving heart for our loving parish!
Community @ Prayer: Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the Eymard Room, we will have an information, prayer and recruitment meeting for our prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament meeting. All current members who pray for an hour are welcome as well as new members who might be interested in signing up to commit to a particular hour during the week, Monday to Thursdays, from after the 9 a.m. Mass until 11 p.m. at night. We look forward to new folks joining in this special ministry of keeping vigil until the LORD returns again. I can share with you that this "hour of power" will change your life and support you in your parenting, your work and more. Remember we would like two persons per hour, but at this point we need someone for Wednesday @ 5 p.m. to support Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament thru that evening.
Ash Wednesday is March 6: Have you chosen the time you’ll begin your Ash Wednesday service with us? See the reminder section of the bulletin, previous page to pick either the 6:30 a.m., 9 a.m. (School will attend this Mass), 12:15 p.m., 4:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. service.
Filling the Church for Tetelestai: Speaking of the Lenten season, plan on attending the production of the musical play “Tetelestai.” (This is the Greek word that means, “It is Finished,” the last words of Christ on the cross.) Please invite everyone to be part of this ecumenical passion play/musical, sharing the last week of Christ’s life and his resurrection from the dead. Open for all ages, and free, Friday, March 1 & Saturday, March 2 at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 3 there is a matinee at 2 p.m. The production takes place in church around the sanctuary (and not on the altar – so this weekend of Masses you will see the stage in the sanctuary). The production is free, but there will be a free-will offering taken for the costs of the musical.
Let’s continue to pray for each other!
In Christ our Eucharist,
Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS, Class of 1979

Playground/Lunchroom Supervision-Primary Grades
The links to sign up for playground/lunchroom supervision for parents/guardians of students in grades Kindergarten-4 for the remainder of the school year are now live!
We are asking that each family (mom, dad, grandma, etc.) choose at least two days to volunteer each time slot being 11:00-1:00. There are many, many time slots open! If you have a child in another grade level, but would find the time to help, please feel free to fill one of the open slots. We are always grateful for the help!
This is a great way for you to interact with your child and his/her classmates during the school day! Lunch/Recess Volunteers should arrive to school at 11:00 and check in at the office. Duties will include supervising students at recess, escorting students to the cafeteria from recess, and supervising in the cafeteria. Volunteers will be with one teacher and two "core" volunteers each day to help direct. Remember that after your two volunteer time slots, you are done for the year, as each month is assigned to a different grade.
Thank you again for your time and service to the students and teachers of SPB! Simply click on the grade level link to pick a time convenient for you: Grade 3, Grade 2, Grade 1, or Kindergarten.
