The Broad Street Counselor
Updates on School Counseling at Broad Street Elementary
October 2021
Happy Fall!
October is typically the month in our school counseling program where we focus on equipping students with the necessary tools to recognize bullying and put a stop to bullying with the support of adults. We differentiate between the different terms joking, teasing, and bullying. We also look at the different roles in a bullying situation: the victim, the bully, and the bystander/upstander.
One resource that we will be utilizing this month is "A Little Spot of Empathy". This book talks about the importance of taking other's perspectives and showing kindness. Perspective is defined in the book as "the way someone looks at something." A great way to talk to your student about perspective-taking is to frame it as "stepping into someone else's shoes" or "seeing things through someone else's glasses." When we take the time to help our students develop empathy skills we are setting them up to have successful relationships.
Take some time to talk to your students about how they show empathy to others and how others might show empathy to them.
As always, let me know if you need any support. Feel free to send me an email to set up a time to connect via phone or Zoom!

Here are two options for you to provide information and feedback for my school counseling program:
Student Information Survey: Tell me about your student and in what areas your family might need support.
School Counseling Program Feedback Form: Tell me your preferences for my school counseling program.
I appreciate your honest feedback as it helps me to continue to improve my program and grow as a school counselor. Thank you in advance for your participation!
