From Mrs. Byard, Media Specialist
Dear Families,
Capstone ebooks has a Winter Special for our students! From now until January 15th, they have provided our students with unlimited access to over 3,000 ebooks. By Friday, I will have shared this information with all LES students, and they will have had an opportunity to log into Capstone and read some of these ebooks. Students will have a bookmark with the username and password on it. I will also provide this information below, in case a student misplaces it.
To access these eBooks, go to the media center home page on our school website. Click on Capstone. When it prompts for a username and password, enter the special passwords to access these books.

FCPS Magnet Program Process
The magnet program is designed for academically gifted students in grades 3–5 with superior performance in both language arts and mathematics. Nomination booklets, which will be available beginning January 31, 2018, may be obtained from the school office, the FCPS Office of Advanced Academics or online at http://www.fcps.org/advacademics. After January 31, 2018, the Office of Advanced Academics will be accepting nominations of present second through fourth grade students for possible placement in the magnet program for the 2018-2019 school year.
Students may be nominated for the magnet program by school staff, parents or jointly. Parents and teachers are encouraged to review information, including some characteristics of gifted students that is posted at http://www.fcps.org/advacademics. Teacher nominations, parent nominations and a completed Parent/Guardian Rating Form are due in the school office by March 1, 2018, so that tests can be administered and information required to complete the nomination packet may be gathered by school staff.
A Magnet Program Overview for parents interested in nominating their child will be held on February 1, 2018, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the Central Office (191 South East Street). Parking is available in the East All Saints Street parking deck or in the parking lot located next to the Central Office off of East All Saints Street. Accessible parking is located in the Commerce Street lot located behind the Central Office. Enter the Board Room at the front of the building. The overview will include components of the magnet program and the processes leading to placement. Please note that this meeting is designed for parents, not students. The snow date for this meeting is February 8, 2018 at the same time and location. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Advanced Academics at 301-696-6891.
LES Yearbook
In an attempt to make things a bit easier, we have already opened up the online yearbook sales NOW through March 16, 2018! The yearbooks still won’t be delivered to the school or distributed to students until the end of May or the first of June; but, you will have more flexibility in when you pay for them.
Paper order forms have already been sent home with all students – so you can still pay by check or cash when you receive those order forms.
We’re hoping the open online option will help alleviate some financial burden on families by allowing parents to pay for the yearbook whenever it’s convenient for them.
To pay online, go to www.ybpay.lifetouch.com- school code: 11042518.

After making the decision to close for snow or other emergencies, FCPS uses MANY ways to communicate! Here are places to check:
- www.fcps.org We post alerts to appear at the very top of each webpage, with details in the home page News and Info section. You can access the FCPS website from many devices.
- Comcast cable channel 18 on TV or online http://www.fcps.org/centraloffice/fcps-television
- FCPS Facebook https://www.facebook.com/FCPSMaryland
- FCPS Twitter https://twitter.com/fcpsmaryland
- FCPS FindOutFirst (FOF) www.fcps.org/fof or

WITHOUT logging in, you may view published notices using the Archive icon on the upper black bar to the left of the Select Language option. From either of the above FOF links, SIGN UP for FindOutFirst EMAIL notices and TEXT messages. Delivery speed depends on your Internet Service Provider (for email) and your phone-service provider (for text messages), message length and other factors. FOF text messages are typically faster than email, which is slower but has room for details. Most subscribers sign up for both.
- We notify about 30 local and regional radio and TV stations but cannot guarantee the accuracy of their messages. There is a Frederick County Public Schools system in Virginia; make sure you're hearing information about FCPS Maryland!
