We will celebrate Valentine’s Day on Monday, February 14th. Students may bring in Valentines to share with the class. Valentines can be accompanied with a small trinket or goodie bag. Goodie bags will be sent home with your child. Candy may be passed out and sent home, but will not be eaten at the party. Look for more information from your child’s classroom teacher in their weekly newsletters.

Our next Restaurant night will be Tuesday, January 25th, at Portillo's in St. Charles on the east side (3895 E. Main St.) from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Show them the paper flyer or flyer on your phone (at the end of this newsletter) for in-person orders. Orders must be placed in the restaurant or in the drive-through. This fundraiser will not apply to orders placed online or through any app, or over the phone.

Every year, District 303 conducts a satisfaction survey eliciting feedback from our students, teachers, and parents. This year, as part of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), we will now be participating in the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. As a parent or guardian, this survey will provide you with the opportunity to share your thoughts on important elements of school effectiveness about your child’s school.

We value your feedback and appreciate you taking the time to provide us with your suggestions for improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. Registration for the D303 Preschool Program Lottery will be open from January 12 - January 26. Names will be randomly selected on January 27, and parents will be notified by email if their child is chosen. Those who are not selected will be placed on a waiting list and will be notified when a space becomes available. Click here to register!

It’s time to register your incoming kindergartener for the 22-23 school year! If your child will be 5 before September 1st, you can virtually register your child beginning January 31st - February 25th. Please go HERE to our district website for more information

This winter, Davis will be embarking on a special project, an all school reading initiative called One School, One Book. Every family will receive a copy of the book The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. We are encouraging everyone in the Davis community to follow the same reading schedule each night and read along with your family’s copy of the book.

What is One Book, One School?

One School, One Book is a shared reading experience for the entire school. Each Davis family and classroom will receive a copy of the book, along with a reading calendar bookmark. We hope to get all families reading the same book at the same time. We aim to build a community of readers at our school.

What do I need to know?

• On Monday, January 31, Mrs. Shaw will read chapter one to your student’s class. That day, the youngest or only child in each family will bring home a copy of the book and the reading schedule. Chapter 2 will be read that night.

• While we encourage your family to read each night together at home, we know that this isn’t always possible. If you are not able to read as a family, the daily readings will be posted on the Davis One School, One Book website read by a different member of our staff. This provides students the opportunity to participate in the reading in the event that reading aloud as a family is difficult.

• In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage active listening and participation. Those that participate in the trivia will have a chance to be entered into a raffle for a small prize.

• A stuffed animal version of Humphrey will visit Davis and hide around the school for students to find.

Each year students receiving special education, those new to the State of Illinois schools and those in mandated grades have vision and hearing screening performed by our vision hearing screener or a Certified School Nurse. Richmond is scheduled for this routine screening the weeks of 1/25 and 1/31 and it may be done as needed or as feasible the rest of the school year. Screening requires the screener to put headphones on your child for hearing screening and may involve your child putting their head into a vision screening machine if a touchless vision camera is not available. Cleaning of equipment will take place and social distancing. In light of this if you DO NOT want your child screened, email Sherry Wisdom sherry.wisdom@d303.org. Hearing screening is mandated for elementary students in kindergarten, first, second and third grades. Vision is mandated for kindergarten and second grade for those who do not have a current vision exam.

We encourage families to prepare Valentines at home for the the Senior Card Drive in the flyer below!! You are welcome to send them to school with your child by Thursday Feb 3rd and Davis and Richmond will mail them to Senator DeWitte's office.
