KYA (Grades 7&8) Recap
We had a delightful time at KYA 2018! Here's the article Sam G. wrote about our time at KYA:
Recently, a group of 24 middle schoolers from Frankfort Middle School attended a mock-legislature conference put on by the Kentucky YMCA. They spent three days and two nights at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky where they presented bills, debated them, and had a lot of fun. The trip, KYA (Kentucky Youth Assembly) started on November 4th and ended on November 6th.). The students were able to get hands-on learning about the legislative process. Students from Frankfort Middle School came back to Frankfort for debate at the capitol.
The Youth Assembly passed and signed into law two of the three bills that FMS brought to KYA. The bills that were passed were researched and written by 7th graders Jaleia Hatchett, Margaret Wilkerson, Ella Denton, Samuel Gilbert, Jackson Gilbert, and Kylee VanAtter and one 8th grader, Rebecca Vaught. The third bill, which was narrowly defeated, was researched and written by 8th graders Olivia Miller, Audrey Gilbert, Makiya McNear, and Khloe Schwaniger, all 8th graders.
Frankfort Middle School’s delegation won some awards for their hard work. Jaleia Hatchett and Audrey Gilbert came back with the Oustanding Speaker Awards and Makiya McNear came back with an Outstanding Delegate award. Our Student Y club was named an Honor Level club. Our KYA delegation was declared a Premiere Delegation. Perhaps the biggest honor was having one bill selected as the best Bluegrass bill of all 26 that were submitted. This bill proposed putting free feminine hygiene products in public buildings and was written by Jaleia Hatchett, Margaret Wilkerson, and Ella Denton. Frankfort Middle School enjoyed a successful trip and gained leadership and debate skills.
Middle School Academic Team
Academic Team practice attendance has become very sporadic. While I understand that students are involved in multiple activities, I am frustrated that I can't get consistency in our practices. Therefore, I am making the following changes:
- We will practice on Mondays when Beta does not meet.
- We will practice on Wednesdays when Y Club does not meet.
- We will practice EVERY Thursday.
This week, we will practice Wednesday and Thursday.
Next week, no practice.
Week of November 26: Monday and Thursday
Week of December 3: Wednesday and Thursday
Week of December 10: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday
Week of December 17: No practice
After Christmas break, we will practice on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays as students are able to attend. Our District competition is January 19.

Here is the latest issue of The Frankfort Tribune.
We will continue working on our stories and building our Literary Journal site, The Panther Papers. It is slowly growing!
More Services
Primary Talent Pool : I have started introducing brain teasers and logic puzzles from first grade up and the kids are loving them! I think first and second graders may begin to read a book as a group, and second graders will be challenged to learn and recite their multiplication tables to me. Third graders are really digging KET's News Quiz every Friday. We learn a lot, get to be a little competitive, and come up with new ideas for ways to make the world better. So exciting!
4th Grade- We are digging into our entrepreneurial projects and learning to code for building an app. If anyone has experience with developing an app, let me know!
