5th Annual Veterans Day Celebration: Honoring All Who Served
We Have Been Busy!
The last two weeks have definitely been chock full of activity here at Westtown-Thornbury. Here is a quick recap:
- Veterans Day - We had the pleasure of welcoming over 40 men and women who have served or who are serving in the military. The morning was filled with many special moments, including a Skype session with three servicemen in each of our 4th grade classrooms. Although the soldiers were in an undisclosed location, we knew it was a different time zone and could hear aircraft flying overhead. It was an experience many are sure to remember for a long time. Thanks to a generous matching gift from the Troutman Family in memory of Jennifer Troutman's father, who was a Vietnam veteran, we are going to provide the VA Medical Center in Coatesville with over $900.
- American Education Week Parent Visitations - It was wonderful to see so many parents here in recognition of the NEA's American Education Week. Although only a small snapshot into a typical day, we appreciate your time and your desire to understand your child's educational experience. We hope that our other communication channels provide you the ongoing information you need to stay informed and involved. If you ever have a question or a concern, please reach out to your child's teacher.
- Snowstorm 2018! - Wow, last Thursday was fun...unless you were stuck in traffic for hours! I think each of us had a story to tell by the end of the day. It is always challenging to be in situations where you have to be reactive rather than proactive. We did our best to place ourselves in your shoes and provide information we believed most helpful and accurate. It was a total team effort and we are fortunate to have it go as well as it could given the circumstances. Your children are to be commended for being so supportive of our efforts and following directions. As a reminder, the event is a great reminder of why it is so important to keep your contact information current with the office!
- Conferences - We appreciate the positive turnout for conferences. Although each one is only twenty-minutes, it is an opportunity to connect on a personal level. As always, you are encouraged to reach out at any point if you have a question or concern. A special thank you to Gina Colley and Kathleen McCune for organizing a dinner for teachers. The parents that cooked and donated items should know that it was delicious and that we are very grateful for the treat!
- School wide Buddy Read - With the support of our PTO who purchased books, the WTE Team PRIDE committee organized our first of 3 school wide activities. Buddy classes got together and had a special guest reader who shared Two Bobbies: A True Story of Hurricane Katrina, Friendship, and Survival by Kirby Larson and Mary Nethery. After the book, we all gathered in the Gym to hear from a former student who is "Being the Change!" [see below]

From the Nurses Office: Preventing the Flu
- CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protection against the flu and its potentially serious complications.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
- If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities.
- Cover your nose and mouth with your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
- After using a tissue, throw it in the trash and wash your hands.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.
