The 5 Themes of Geography
By Rachael
1. Location
Absolute Location is the exact position a place is at. For example the latitude and longitude of Wilton, Iowa is 41.5894 degrees north and 91.0175 degrees west. Relative Location is where a place is located when compared to other places or landmarks.
Example: Iowa is south of Minnesota. This would be a relative location.
2. Place
What is it like?
It describes the physical and human characteristics that make it unique.
Example: Iowa has a lot of cornfields.
3. Region
Areas that share common characteristics are regions.
Example: The Midwestern states are all generally farming states.
4. Movement
Movement explains how and why people and things move and are connected.
It also explains why certain regions are heavily populated and others are not.
Example: Iowa is not heavily populated because most of the land is used for farming.
5. Human-Environment Interaction
Human-Environment Interaction describes the relationship between people and their environment. It also explains how people use and affect their environment.
Example: Farmers in Iowa use the environment to produce food.
