Bedminster Bobcat

January 2016

Dear Parents and Guardians:
It is my hope that you had a most enjoyable Holiday Season! With the 2016 Year upon us, I'd like to share a favorite and well known quote from Helen Keller, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." At Bedminster, we have so many wonderful students and staff engaging in great activities each and every day, and we want share those things with you. It is our hope that this new formatted newsletter will provide a more effective means of communication between home and school. On behalf of the students and staff at Bedminster Elementary School, please enjoy the first edition of the "New and Improved" Bedminster Bobcat Newsletter.

With the holiday season just passed, many students probably received wonderful electronic gadgets. We ask all parents to remind their child(ren) not to bring them into school per PSD Elementary Student Handbook page 7.

Now that winter is upon us, please take time to prepare your children with the appropriate clothing for adverse weather conditions. Always prepare for outdoor recess and for standing outside waiting for the bus. Children are outside at recess approximately 30 minutes each day. Getting fresh air, especially during the winter months is important. When your children get dressed in the morning, keep in mind that they are not inside a warm building all day.

It is that time of year to provide information in the event of a school closing. Also included is the modified kindergarten schedule should a late opening be announced. Please know that any decision to close school is made by the Superintendent and not by the individual schools. The decision to close early will only be made when faced with extreme weather conditions. When the decision to close or delay the opening of school is made, there are multiples ways you can be informed:
School Closing Number 757: KYW News Radio 1060 and others (Refer to district calendar for a complete list of radio and television stations that will announce our school closings.

First grade students read a story titled, Tacky the Penguin written by Helen Lester. The students wrote thank you notes to Tacky from the point of view of another character in the book. Each student created a penguin to accompany his/her writing. By completing this project, students practiced many curricular skills, including; completing the steps of the writing process, writing in the letter writing genre, and responding to literature.

Mrs. Nolan's Social Studies classes had a fun and creative time doing Explorer research. They shared information about the explorer of their choice through skits, news interviews, raps, slideshows, posters and song. They learned a lot and had a terrific time doing it!

VISITING AUTHOR—Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen

Thanks to the Berdinka family, author Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen visited Bedminster Elementary on November 19, 2015. Sudipta’s presentations blended storytelling and language arts with her personal experiences. Her humorous presentations focused on the joys and challenges of writing. She was very impressed with our children who truly seemed to enjoy her and her books.

Thank you to all our Bedminster Elementary families that generously donated food to the Pennridge Fish Organization during our food drive in December. The donations of food were overwhelming. Thank you to Megan McCluskey and her husband Richard Chiappetta for picking up and delivering the food to Pennridge Fish every day.

The Pennridge School District is currently in the process of planning Kindergarten registration for the 2016-2017 school year. Information will be posted on the district website ( the first week of February for any resident with a child who will reach the age of 5 on or before August 31, 2016. If you, or someone you know, has a child that meets the age requirement, please direct them to the district website to complete the online registration process.

PTG Updates

We had 34 students' families and faculty members purchase Scrip gift cards during our December fundraiser, which helped us raise $456 to be used towards providing activities, programs and school equipment for our students. Some examples of how $456 could be used by the PTG would be to pay for things such as Skate Night and our Fall Hay Ride, or to cover approximately 5% of the annual cost of our Class Trips. We received lots of wonderful feedback about this fundraiser, and we hope to repeat it in the future! Thank you again, and we hope you have fun giving, or spending, those gift cards!

We’re so glad that so many of you could join us for dinner at our Fundraiser at Panera Bread on December 7th, 2015. Bedminster students were so excited to hang out and have dinner with Mr. and Mrs. DiPaolo, and some of their teachers. We got to meet the lovely families of Mrs. Godfrey and Mrs. White. Mr. Sadowsky was there; and Mrs. Kern and Mrs. May both stopped in for take out! The fantastic dinner conversation ranged from ice hockey, to kid sized high heeled shoes, to how to train your cat, and everyone had a great time while enjoying a yummy dinner. The estimated total dollar amount of meals purchased was $700, so at a 20% donation, Bedminster Elementary will earn approximately $140 from this fun fundraiser.

Our BARNES & NOBLE fundraiser ended on December 12th, 2015, and our FIVE AND BELOW fundraiser ended on December 23rd, 2015. Thank you so much to everyone who participated! We will announce the totals raised from these fundraisers when that information is available from the retailers.
