Tucson High Magnet School welcomes Principal Elizabeth Rivera.
Interview and Article written by THMS Senior Kalina Celaya.
New beginnings can be tough, especially when you have established a routine and are familiar with what once was. Tucson High Magnet School’s new principal, Ms. Rivera is taking this new beginning and doing everything she can to make even more improvements to our school.
Having been a teacher and then administrator, Ms. Rivera has ideas on how to bring a positive environment to Tucson High, and it all starts with establishing relationships. Mother, artist, and outdoors enthusiast, Ms. Rivera wants the best for all populations at THMS, and she is doing her best to achieve that. At least once a day, she likes to get out of her office to observe classrooms, not only to become familiar with the students but to get to know the personality and classroom environment of the teachers.
With good intentions, Ms. Rivera is trying to let students know that they are not alone, “all kids' voices are heard, and all kids are understood,” she said. She does this by amplifying the voices of students and student leaders on campus, for example, the morning announcements. Initiated by the Student Council, it was decided to start doing morning announcements as a way to have a positive high school experience. After saying the pledge of allegiance, “they […] use that opportunity to also send a positive message to kids, so they start their day off with something that’s going to be uplifting,” stated the principal. Not only is Ms. Rivera initiating positive surroundings; she is building relationships with students and faculty.
Ms. Rivera is not one to be intimidated by, “it’s important to me to be out at lunch every day to build relationships with students and get to know them, their names, their faces, what groups they hang out with, what are they into,” she confessed. She wants students to know that it is okay to do the right thing and that it is okay to have a positive perspective on school. Ms. Rivera is aware that there is room for improvement, however, she is doing what she can, making Tucson High a better place and safe environment.
THMS Student Highlights:
2022 SARSEF winner of the AWG Student Award for Geoscience Excellence (SAGE) Laylalanai Gocobachi who was a Biotechnology student and participant in Mr. Jonas’ summer research program SANITY, was just selected as Miss Pascua Yaqui. In asking Laylalanai about this incredible honor she states;
“I received a scholarship through the Miss Pascua Yaqui program. The program maintains a tradition of empowering young Yaqui women to achieve their professional goals, while providing a forum in which to express their opinions, intelligence, and talent reflecting the tribal principles, values, language, culture, history and traditions. With this title I get the honor of representing the tribe at intertribal, local, state, and national functions. The scholarship from this program will assist me in my college/university tuition.”
Congratulations Laylalanai.
