Community Newsletter -- November 18, 2022

A Message from Mr. Kosal:

Together we make a family!

Greetings, Red Imp families! This is Mr. Patrick Kosal, your proud interim principal. Next Friday's newsletter will be skipped due to the Thanksgiving break, so this edition is packed with lots of important information - please take some time to read and catch up on MMS happenings! (The next MMS Community Newsletter will be sent on Friday, December 2nd)

This past fall, the news that MMS had dropped a letter grade on the state's report card and is now designated a "low performing" school hit me and many of our staff members very hard. These labels were based on last year's student performance on End of Grade tests which showed that many of our students are not performing at pre-pandemic levels (for instance, less than 1/2 our students are considered on-grade in reading). The data also showed that MMS was very far away from making the academic growth expected in the average student: "meeting growth" ranges from +2 to - 2... MMS ranked at -7.56, meaning the average Red Imp student grew far less academically than was expected last year. That data has been very hard to swallow for a staff of teachers that work immensely hard each day to make learning challenging, relevant, and fun for our 7th and 8th grade students. Yes, there are a number of factors for why we believe MMS students struggled so much last year (staff shortages, quarantine absences, etc.) but ultimately we have to do better for our students. The staff and I knew that some drastic steps needed to be taken to help our students get back to pre-pandemic levels and be ready for the upcoming rigors of high school and colleges / careers.

After much soul searching, discussion, debate, analysis of our student data, investigating of other successful school's processes, MMS has decided to alter its second semester master schedule. See the proposed new bell schedule here, which is planned to go into effect at the start of second semester (January 4th, 2023). Here are some things to note about the new schedule and some of the reasoning for the changes:

  • SHAC time is eliminated, which gives an extra 20 minutes each day to put back into academics - that's 100 minutes each week for our students' core classes! Times for students to go outside or take a "brain break" will occur at different times each week, especially in non-tested subjects. Giving students fun experiences in school is still important, but this time is valuable for our academic plan.
  • Time in core classes is extended to 65 minutes each (up from 60). 1st period is slightly extended to account for late buses, taking attendance, and viewing the ImpTV news each day for school announcements.
  • Transition times have been trimmed from three minutes to two. At this point in the year, students are expected to proceed to their next class promptly and not loiter in the hallways.
  • Imp Time (homeroom / intervention time) will be moved from 1st period to 3rd period to ensure more students are awake and present for this valuable intervention time.
  • MMS data has shown how valuable our Intervention periods in Imp Time have been (all but one of the Math / Reading intervention groups either "met" or "exceeded" growth last year, even as the growth school-wide was very poor). However, most MMS students currently aren't in an intervention. Our new schedule will place all students participate in reading intervention twice per week and math intervention twice per week. This will be done via an online program called Exact Path (from Edmentum). Exact Path places students exactly at their individual skill level for both math & reading and helps them learn at their pace to fill in gaps / misconceptions in their learning. If they're above grade level, Exact Path will also stretch them past the middle school curriculum into high school concepts so they're ready for MHS. We're very excited at MMS about ALL students having a chance to grow in reading and math during Imp Time!
  • Wednesdays will be school-wide Club / Enrichment days during Imp Time where students will have opportunities to de-stress and enjoy themselves with a group of students sharing similar interests. Many groups will have the opportunity to go outside for SHAC time during Club days each week.

As you can see, our bell schedule changes are designed help MMS move toward our School Improvement Plan goals of becoming a C school or better, "meeting" or "exceeding" academic growth for all students, and helping our 7th & 8th graders bounce back from the remote learning dip so they're better prepared for high school and post-graduate endeavors.

Still, MMS wants to hear from you, the parents and the MGSD community: please submit your feedback on this short Google Doc feedback form about the proposed schedule changes, including if you'd like Mr. Kosal or a member of the admin team to reach out to you personally to discuss your concerns. Nothing is finalized yet, although we at MMS feel strongly that this change will greatly benefit our students, staff, and school culture of learning. We very much appreciate your feedback and hope to hear your thoughts!

Free Online Tutoring for Students

MGSD has partnered with North Carolina Virtual Public Schools' EDvantage program to offer Free Online Tutoring opportunities. Students enrolled in 8th grade Math, NC Math 1, or 8th grade Science can sign up for individual, 1:1 virtual sessions on Mondays-Thursdays between 4pm-7:30pm. Sessions last 30 minutes; sign up by using this link:

When they sign up, they will get an email from NCVPS with the link for their session, and a link to cancel or reschedule if needed. Please reinforce to students that they should be respectful of tutors' time and not be "no-shows" if they sign up for a time.

Students who do not have Internet access at home or need a quiet place to attend tutoring are welcome at the Selma Burke Community Center.

We hope your students will take advantage of this "EDvantage"!!

A Message about the MGSD Strategic Plan (feedback request):

Hello MGSD community!

The Mooresville Graded School District is asking you to share your thoughts on areas the district should prioritize over the next five years. Your responses will inform the development of the district’s next strategic plan.

This survey will ask for your feedback on possible priority areas for the district, as well as what the district should start, stop, or continue prioritizing moving forward. Students, parents, caregivers and guardians, community members, and district employees are encouraged to participate.

All responses will be kept anonymous and confidential. Please note your survey responses will not be recorded until the submit button is clicked. Each stakeholder only needs to complete one survey.

The stakeholder survey can be accessed using this link: It will remain open for two weeks until Friday, December 2, 2022.

Thank you for your participation!

Science Club Field Trip

The Mooresville Middle School Science Club still has spaces available for students who want to attend the science field trip this coming spring! This is an amazing opportunity for students to explore coastal life science. Deposits have already begun to be collected; more information about the field trip is found below:

Here is the information that was passed out to all science club members but the trip is open to anyone at MMS. Please email Mrs. McAllister ( if you have any questions. We hope to see some new Red Imps at our next Science Club meeting!

How to alert MMS of a student absence:

The email address for parents to alert MMS about student absences is:

Parents can upload doctor's notes as well. We hope this process will be easier on everyone instead of always sending a note with the student that gets lost so easily!

Are you a Motivator??

MMS is looking for Motivators for our 2022 - 2023 school year! If you are a parent, grandparent, or even community member with a heart for children, we want your help!

The Motivators are ways for family / community members to volunteer time during the school day to monitor hallways and our campus grounds while also getting to know MMS students and staff. We love to have extra adult presence in the building to support our students and help out when needed. If you have at least one hour a week, we would love to have you volunteer.

Email Ms. Brown for more information.
