This Week At Tustin High...

Tustin High School is one of 12 TUSD community schools in TUSD that includes Benson, Beswick, Estock, Guin Foss, Heideman, Loma Vista, Nelson, Columbus Tustin, Sycamore Magnet Academy, Tustin Ranch and Utt. What is a community school and what does that mean for us? Community schools are a strategy for collaboration between educators, local community members, families, and students to strengthen conditions for learning and healthy development. In addition to rigorous instruction, we organize resources, support and opportunities in and out of school so that students can thrive.

Before learning can take place, basic needs first have to be met. In addition to our monthly food distribution, we opened a Community Center on campus in March. Students can pick up snacks, school supplies, or shop for clothes in the Community Closet. Our on-campus pantry allows us to stock non-perishable food for families experiencing economic hardship. We provide basic medical, dental and vision services on campus through our partnership with Families Together of Orange County.

A culture of care and belonging is key in a community school. Our teachers utilize strategies to increase engagement and collaboration between students. ASB and Tiller News Media connect our community in fun and creative ways. Through a team of support staff that includes counselors, mental health specialists, school social worker, health office staff and community liaison, we are able to support students holistically to address academic, social emotional and health needs. We are opening a Student Support Center on campus to provide additional mental health support - stay tuned for more info!

As a community school, we connect with families through community events such as parent and student workshops, our annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration and family art nights. We want THS to be a place of belonging for all. Be on the lookout for a district survey to share your input on how we can better serve our students and families. Mark your calendars for Family Art Night on October 4 and Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration/Report Card Night on October 18!

We are excited for our work as a community school, and that all Tillers will have support to achieve at their highest levels! If you are interested in learning more about our community school plan, please reach out to our Community School Specialist, Pat Hsieh, at phsieh@tustin.k12.ca.us.

Big picture

School Attendance Matters!

Regular, on-time school attendance is vital to the success of all students. Across TUSD, our goal is to have all children present in school every day and on time. We are grateful for our partnership with parents and guardians to help us ensure student success. Important information regarding building strong habits early in your child's academic career and keeping your student on track through middle and high school is included. We encourage all of our families to review TUSD attendance policies and communicate with your school's office regarding absences due to illness. Thank you for continuing to support student success through regular, on-time attendance at school.
