Pontiac Elementary Week of March 23-March 27
Retaining ESOL students - a reminder from the district office
As you review the progress of our ESOL students, please be mindful that students cannot be retained due to their language barriers. We have to have clear and compelling evidence that indicates there are other areas of concern. Please be cautious as well if parents agree to the retention based on language barriers.
As a reminder teachers should always keep samples of accommodated and modified work to demonstrate the student’s English level is being taken into consideration. This is especially important if a student is being considered for retention. Suggestions include: lesson plans showing modified objectives or presentation, alternate reading assignments, modified rubrics, modified assessments, evidence of alternate methods of grading, etc.
To ensure we have information needed to consider a child for retention, there is an “ESOL District Retention Committee Request” that we ask your retention committee to complete for each student being considered for retention. Please reach out to our ESOL teacher, Melissa Olivares, if you have any further questions or need assistance with a student.
Thank you for serving our ESOL students!
Great job, PES!
