BARBER BULLETIN

Pontiac Elementary Week of March 23-March 27

Retaining ESOL students - a reminder from the district office

As you review the progress of our ESOL students, please be mindful that students cannot be retained due to their language barriers. We have to have clear and compelling evidence that indicates there are other areas of concern. Please be cautious as well if parents agree to the retention based on language barriers.

As a reminder teachers should always keep samples of accommodated and modified work to demonstrate the student’s English level is being taken into consideration. This is especially important if a student is being considered for retention. Suggestions include: lesson plans showing modified objectives or presentation, alternate reading assignments, modified rubrics, modified assessments, evidence of alternate methods of grading, etc.

To ensure we have information needed to consider a child for retention, there is an “ESOL District Retention Committee Request” that we ask your retention committee to complete for each student being considered for retention. Please reach out to our ESOL teacher, Melissa Olivares, if you have any further questions or need assistance with a student.

Thank you for serving our ESOL students!

Pontiac's Golf Tournament

Are you interested in serving the community and Pontiac? Please consider serving on the Pontiac Foundation. This team of people come together to plan a school golf tournament. Mr. Todd Weiss, a parent of two students in our Montessori program, has agreed to chair the team this year and we are hopeful for lots of support on this team! The team plans a golf tournament and silent auction. Thank you for your consideration. Please let K.Barber know if you are interested!

AWESOME JOB TO OUR TED TALK WINNERS!

As part of our Student Ted Talk clubs, (10) students from our PBL team were selected to present their TED Talk to an audience this past week. Judges selected the students that they felt shared their passion the best and these two students will present their TED Talk at the Midlands Summit on June 10-11. Congratulations to Grant Capers and Alaina Austin! All of the students were fantastic presenters!
