Miles of Smiles
February 9, 2014
On February 9, we will have dentists from Miles of Smiles program through San Antonio Metro Health at Menchaca providing FREE dental evaluations and fluoride treatments for our non-Head Start students. This is voluntary and opt-in only. Consent forms were sent home for the Miles of Smiles program last week.
If you would like your child to participate, fill out the consent form, check yes, sign the form and return to your teacher. If you do not wish for them to be seen, simply check no. Again, this is voluntary and opt-in only. If we do not have a signed consent form with a "yes" marked, your child will NOT be evaluated.
Forms are due by February 2nd. If you have any questions, please contact our school nurse at: heather.siebert@southsideisd.org.

Kindergarten Library Book Check-Out
Students in Kindergarten check-out library books to take home every time they visit the MECC Library during their specials rotation. When our little Kindergarten Cardinals check books out from our library they need to treat them with care, so that others can enjoy them for years to come. Here are some things to remember when books come home:
- Watch Out for Water - Water and other liquids can ruin books.
- Store your book in a safe place - When you bring your library book home, be sure to store it in a safe place like your backpack. Pets and very young children can cause unwanted accidental damage.
- Handle Books Gently - Always turn book pages carefully. If a page accidentally rips while you are reading it, please bring it into the library for repair.
* In order to teach our PK4 students how to properly care for books, when they check-out from the library, those books remain in the child's classroom under the watchful eye of the classroom teacher.
Don't Be Late, You'll Miss Something Great!
School Begins at 7:10 A.M.
One of the most important aspects of school is that it is organized, scheduled and predictable. Students depend on the structure of the day. They know where they have to be and when. They know the main purpose for being in school is to learn and that routines are in place precisely to help them focus on that learning.
When students are repeatedly tardy, these routines are disrupted. Children who are often late have trouble settling in and mastering routines. Tardiness can throw off their whole morning or even their day, especially if the late commute to school was stressful. Thank you for being on time!
Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow
Last week our Average Daily Attendance was 87.8%
Remember, when a student is absent for more than 3 consecutive days because of a personal illness, they must bring a statement from a doctor or health clinic verifying the illness or condition that caused the student’s extended absence from school. Otherwise, the student’s absence may be considered unexcused and, if so, would be considered to be in violation of compulsory attendance laws.

Don't forget students with perfect attendance from January 9th - April 19th will be entered into a drawing to earn their shot to become Fiesta Royalty in our annual MECC Fiesta Parade.
Kinder - King & Queen
PK4 - Prince & Princess
PK3 - Duke & Duchess.
