Just like the Chinese Japanese wrote with paint brushes and ink on paper. Calligraphy is known for it's beautiful writing. Paint brushes with paper and ink started in the 600's. Japanese detailed was usally very detailed.
Flower Arranging and Gardening
One tradition that buddhists brought to Japan was flower arranging. People would ephasized simple arrangements and would highlight simple nature. Bonsai is a type of art of growing mini trees or shrubs in small pots. A Zen garden were designed to help people think quietly. There gardens are arranged with rocks, pathways, and very few flowers or trees.
