Be A Star!
The Hinesburg Community School BE A STAR program has been relaunched with new STAR tokens and a sparkly new STAR box; generously built and donated by Cole, Sawyer and Nora's father; Ken Cudney. The beautiful glitter design was donated and designed by Michael DiNicola of the Charlotte Central School. Many thanks to Ken & Michael for making the STAR box and for allowing us to continue to recognize the positive happenings at Hinesburg Community School.
We also launched the "REACH FOR THE STARS" lunch program, where we invite a few students from every K-4 classroom each month to enjoy a fancy lunch with Mrs. Locke. Teachers nominate students who exhibit the HCS core values of Belonging, Sharing, Trust, Accepting Responsibility and Respect. These students also received a certificate recognizing their hard work!

Spotlight on 5th Grade!
The fifth grade team has been working hard to transition into the new school year. We are focusing our reading class work on studying fictional books. Students are using this focus to set goals and record data to improve reading skills. This connects to our work in writing class where we are creating narratives by planning characters, setting, and plot. We are pushing ourselves to add details to our writing to show internal character thinking and external plot events. In math we have completed our first unit that dealt with number sense, volume, surface area and division. Students also looked at the difference between an equation and expression, practicing writing both.
Our largest undertaking has been our focus on Science, Technology and Math (STEM) through participation in Starbase. Starbase is an activity-based curriculum conducted over four days at the Vermont National Air Guard Base in Colchester. The core curriculum at Starbase focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Through experiential learning the students experience a wide range of content.
So far two of the three fifth grade classes have completed their visits to the base. The other class will attend in January and February. Students have learned about Newton's Laws; explored nanotechnology, navigation, rocket building, and mapping. They were captivated by engineering as they used the computer to design space stations, all-terrain vehicles, and submersibles. Math was embedded throughout the curriculum and students used metric measurement, estimation, calculation, and data analysis to solve questions. Teamwork is stressed as they work together to explore, explain, elaborate and evaluate concepts such as buoyancy, mass, and gravity. In addition, the class has a guest speaker who is a F-16 pilot. The last day at the base students had the opportunity to visit decommissioned airplanes kept on the base. The final day of Starbase will happen here at HCS in May when students launch their individual rockets at school. This last day is fun for the entire HCS community and parents will be welcome to join us, as we see how high each rocket will go.
Finally we are branching out into our volunteer work as some students have been selected as reading buddies in the preschool. Students are excited to help out and spread the joy of a good book to our school’s youngest students. Students will have various opportunities throughout the year to give back to others through volunteer service.

Bonding:
- Know that you are your child's #1 influence.
- Create a positive, loving environment.
- Stay involved and make time every day to check in.
Boundaries:
- Set clear rules and consequences.
- Teach the risks of underage substance abuse.
- Help them invest in friends wisely.
Monitoring:
- Always know where your child is, who they are with, and what they are doing.
- Limit access to substances by locking them up or otherwise making them inaccessible
- Let your children know you love them and want to keep them safe.
Visit our WEBSITE for tips and resources to help you use our framework in your family! ParentIN is a program of Connecting Youth in the Champlain Valley School District.
Lyric Theater ~ Annie the Musical
Lyric Theatre Company presents Annie the Musical on the Flynn MainStage, Burlington, for six performances, November 8-11. A spunky red-headed orphan and her lovable dog Sandy find a forever home in this heartwarming family show.
Hinesburg Community School student Stephanie Miskavage plays the title role. This spirited 5th grader squealed with joy when she found out she would play every girl’s dream role! Like Annie, Stephanie is fiercely loyal and tells it like it is. Previous Lyric roles: Grover Dill in A Christmas Story, Charlie in Wonka Jr., and Jojo in Seussical Kids. Veronica Miskavage (Orphan-Betty), a 7th grader, isn’t used to playing second fiddle to her younger sister, but in this case, is glad to share the stage as a fellow orphan! Veronica performed in Lyric’s A Christmas Story last fall. Between Lyric shows, Veronica has done other musical theatre productions, like Honk! where she was Ida, and Flynn Show Choir.
Performance dates/times:
Thursday, November 8: 7:30 pm
Friday, November 9: 7:30 pm
Saturday, November 10: 1:00 pm and 7:30 pm
Sunday, November 11: 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm
Tickets: $24-$42; student/senior discount at some performances; group rates are available should you wish to organize a group from your school to attend and support Stephanie and Veronica. Order online at flynntix.org or call 802-86FLYNN. Lyric’s production of Annie the Musical is proud to be a Vermont Arts 2018 event.
