SPANISH SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL
Week of May 23 - May 27
From the desk of Sean Hall, Principal
Hello Spanish Springs High School Families,
Congratulations to Softball Head Coach Jeff Davidson and the Team for qualifying for the State Tournament this week at College of Southern NV in Henderson and Bishop Gorman HS in Las Vegas. All the games will be Live Streamed on NFHS Network (please see the link below). Good Luck to the Lady Cougars!
Our Cougar Battalion is hosting and competing in the Northern Nevada Raider Championship this Saturday at 8:00 AM. If you haven't attended a Raider event previously, I highly encourage seeing this one as our teams compete in a 5K, Tire Flip, Cross Country Rescue, Physical Team Test, and One Rope Bridge. We hope to see you there.
Congratulations to our lacrosse, track, and golf teams for making it to the state competitions!
The choir have worked so hard throughout the year, and it was great to see an outstanding live performance in our theater again last Wednesday.
Congratulations to the students who were inducted into the National Honors Society on Tuesday the 17th.
The Fine Arts Department graced our hallways Thursday evening with tremendous artwork which included drawings, paintings, photography, digital arts, mixed media, and ceramics for an amazing art show. Well done artists!
Our Band and Orchestra will be having their final concert on Tuesday, May 24th in the Theater starting at six o'clock. We can't wait to see you there.
Finally, our Annual Senior Awards night will be Wednesday, May 25th.
We don't have any new updates for graduation, but I will continue to post the pertinent information below.
If you haven't completed the form for tickets and parking passes, please make sure to do so as soon as you can. The link can be found at www.washoeschools.net/sshs. All families will need parking passes and tickets in order to attend the event at Lawlor. Students are able to request up to 10 tickets and 3 parking passes.
If you have ordered your tickets and have not yet picked them up, they are available in the front office. Ordered cap and gowns that were not picked up are also available in the front office.
Graduation is June 9th at Lawlor Events Center. Doors will open at 3:30 for seating and the ceremony begins at 4:30.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Sean Hall

A Note From the Student Relations Office
Food Delivery on SSHS Campus
Cougar Families,
We need your help. We are seeing an increase in students ordering food delivery (Uber Eats, Door Dash, etc.) and this creates a significant safety risk. The district does not allow this, as it creates a situation where many strangers are entering campus, without our knowledge, and interacting with our students without supervision. Please have a conversation with your student(s) to help mitigate this safety risk. NOTE: Food delivered to campus will be confiscated and must be picked up by the student no later than 2:45pm in SRO. Delivery drivers will be escorted off campus immediately.
Thank you for your help.
Senior Pranks
Congratulations on making it to the end of this dynamic school year! We are looking forward to ending the year safely and watching all of our students walk across the graduation stage. We ask that you remind your senior students to avoid the possibility of not participating in graduation ceremonies by engaging in senior pranks that threaten safety or damage school property. We support the long-standing traditions here at SSHS, but insist on keeping our students and staff safe and respecting our school campus. Thank you for your support in our pursuits of ending the year on a positive note for all.

Attendance
Attendance Policy
Spanish Springs HS follows all WCSD Attendance Policies and Procedures.
In Summary:
If your student(s) is sick, please keep your student(s) home from school.
Parent/guardian must call or email the school each day their student(s) is
absent to verify the student’s absence on that day to ensure the child's
safety. Please call the SSHS Office at 425-7733 to verify student absences.
Students who miss 10% or more of the total number of class periods for any reason during a semester (high school) for each course will be chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism rules are set by State and Federal guidelines.
Students will not be retained or fail a course (high school) based on attendance. However, students who miss 10% or more of class periods for any course that meets in a semester will be chronically absent in that course(s).
If the student must miss an entire class period for any reason, it is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to see that a written/verbal verification is provided to the school prior to, during, or within three days of an absence. Failure to do so within three days of the student's return to school will result in the absence being coded as Unverified (AUK).
The Health Department Excluded Distance Learning OR Contact Tracing (HDED or HDCT) code is used when a school has been notified by Washoe County Health Department or Washoe County School District that a student is excluded from school but is able to work on Temporary Distance Learning for the length of the exclusion.
Students are to attend Temporary Distance Learning daily and complete work assigned. Students will check-in daily on MS Teams through the Daily Agenda. If a student is unable to work due to health reasons or the student chooses not to work or communicate with the teacher daily, the student will be marked HDE. The HDED and HDCT codes do not count toward chronic absenteeism. HDE does count toward chronic absenteeism.
Guide to Attendance for Families
This guide, available in English and Spanish, helps parents, guardians, and families understand the various components of the attendance policy. Click on button below.
Make-Up Work
Make-up work must be provided for any absence, but it is the student’s responsibility to request the make-up work in advance or on the first day s/he returns to class. Because it is impossible to make-up some in-class assignments, coursework of a similar nature may be given. It is the student’s responsibility to turn in all make-up class work at the designated deadline. Failure to complete the make-up work within the designated deadline will result in no credit received for the make-up work.
Students will have the number of days absent plus one to complete missed make up work or concepts missed beginning on the day the teacher provides the missed assignments to the student. Teachers must provide missed make-up work or concepts missed within two days of the student’s return to class.
