Ella Fitzgerald
The greatest jazz singer
The Start
It started when 16 year old Ella Fitzgerald entered a competitive talent show as a dancer, forgot the steps, and won first place.
. . .
Ella got dared from her friends to enter a competitive talent show. She entered as a dancer. When she got up on stage she got so nervous she froze up. she knew she couldn't just stand there, so she sang one of her favorite songs, " The Object of my Affection". She got so brave she even added some of her own touches! She later won first prize and had to give three encores. Music companies heard about Ella and it fired a musical career.
Yes, I am that Interesting
Ella was born on April 25, 1918 in Virginia. She grew up in Yonkers, New York. Ella became very popular as well as her song A Tisket, A Tasket. Sadly, Ella died on June 15, 1996 in Beverly Hills, California. If she were still alive today she would be 98 years old.
Ella was a black singer and was alive in the time of segregation. She thought segregation was not right. So she fought and stould up for what was right. She did that by speaking her mind.
Life in Yonkers
Ella had a musical family. Her dad loved to play guitar, and her mom had a beautiful soprano voice. Sadly Ella's dad died shortly after she was born. In high school Ella sang in glee club. Also in high school, at age 16, Ella's mom died. Ella was in so much grief, she quit high school and danced for coins in the street.
Traditions around the House
When Ella was younger her mom would sing and her dad would play guitar. Also at home, on any free night she had, Ella would listen and sing along to music. Ella also would just plain old listen to music with her mom.
Singin' Scat
Ella recorded A Tisket, A Tasket, It Ain't Necessarily So, and Summer Time. Her song A Tisket, A Tasket ( a brown and yellow basket) was her most popular recording. It sold over a million copies. Ella enjoyed experimenting with her singing. For example at the Cotten Club Ella was supposed to be singing a certain song, but forgot the lyrics. So she experimented and sang syllables and a whole bunch of random things, and created scat.
Ella is the Bomb
In my opinion Ella Fitzgerald is awesome! " I think Ella and her story are truly amazing," says Hannah Sheer. Ella is amazing and I believe that Ella needs to be reconized more because of how she fought against segregation.
