PHONE & ELECTRONICS USE PROHIBITED AT SCHOOL
The use of cell phones or other electronic communications devices (ECD) by students is prohibited at any time while in school or on a district vehicle. Keep in mind that many of the new "fitness trackers" or smart watches have the capability to communicate through phone/text, or take pictures and video, and as such are not allowed to be worn during school hours. Students wearing such devices will be asked to remove them and place them into their backpack.
Secondary students may carry ECDs during the school day, but they cannot be displayed or used. Elementary students are not permitted to possess an ECD at any time.
The use of an ECD’s picture-taking or internet connection capability is not permitted. Utica Community Schools will not be responsible for the theft, loss or damage of any ECD.
BUS TIPS FOR WINTER WEATHER
The winter weather can cause unique situations when the temperatures dip and snow starts to fall. Our Transportation Department has some tips to make the winter safe and enjoyable.
· Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
· Always wait for the bus on the sidewalk or at least 10 feet from the edge of the road.
· Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the door opens before approaching it.
· Never run to or from the bus.
· Always wait at the bus stop in an orderly manner.
· Do not throw snow balls or other items.
· Be considerate of your neighbors respect their property including trees, fences, etc. at the bus stop.
Earlier this fall all students practiced safely exiting the bus in event of anemergency.
CHILDREN PARTICIPATE IN OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Daily outdoor recesses are a valuable factor in promoting healthy classroom conditions. Children are expected to participate in recess activities so they should wear adequate outdoor clothing now that the weather is getting colder. This includes boots, hats and mittens. It is important that children learn to be prepared for changes in Michigan weather. All students will remain indoors for supervised recess if the weather is inclement. Factors used to determine indoor recess include rain, wind chill and playground conditions.

OUR WINTER "FRIENDS" RETURN
Head lice can occur any time of the year, but oftentimes we see an increase in cases during the cold winter months - when we spend most of our time indoors sharing close-quarters and coatrooms.
A great habit to get into to avoid a runaway case of head lice is to conduct a regular head and scalp check on your children. If you confirm (or suspect…) head lice, there are lots of over the counter products to help eliminate them. Please inform the school office staff and we will provide for additional disinfecting in the classrooms. We can also provide tips and tricks if needed!

Ready, Set, Academic Blitz! Plan Early for Success!
The Academic Blitz is an opportunity for all UCS families to find out more about the extensive portfolio of opportunities and programs available to students through its schools.
The featured informational sessions are designed for elementary to high school students and help parents develop a plan that best fits their student’s needs. Topics include Advanced Placement opportunities, Specialty Programs and separate sessions on preparing for junior high, high school and college.
The Academic Blitz, created 13 years ago by the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board, was developed to ensure parents knew of the district’s available secondary services and programs open to all students.
At the event, families can select up to three sessions to attend and visit a series of informative booths. District administrators, building principals and staff are also onsite and available to parents.
Join us for this year’s Academic Blitz scheduled for Thursday, January 9, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Henry Ford II High School, 11911 Clinton River Road in Sterling Heights.
More information, please visit http://www.uticak12.org/academicblitz.
