Principal's Brief

Greetings Cougar Nation,

It is my pleasure to WELCOME you to the 2020-2021 school year here at the Ross! We are excited to have our returning families and look forward to meeting our new families in the near future. As you are aware, all CCS schools are beginning the year Virtually under the state's Plan C. We were already prepared to start this way in July so it really isn't much of a change for our staff. I do know that there are many opinions out there about this plan, but know we have the health and safety of our students, families, and staff at the heart of all decisions. The purpose of this communication is to make you aware of important information that will help create a smooth start for all.

We want to stress that we are back in school. It is the expectation that all students are joining their live classes daily and submitting all assignments through Canvas, which is our Learning Management Platform for the 2020-2021 school year. Attendance will be counted and all assignments will be graded. All grades will count toward the final course grade and GPA for high school students. We need your support to ensure students are connecting, staying updated with attendance and school work.

Effective August 3rd, our administrative team and 12-month staff will return to the building on a regular basis. Our phone lines will be answered during normal business hours at the school from 8:00- 4:00 PM daily. We hope this will help to make communication easier with our families. Teachers will have the option to teach from their classrooms or to continue teleworking from home. Please utilize the teacher's email for regular communication with them. All email addresses can be found on our school website.

Expectations During Virtual Learning

Important Information/Updates

2020-2021 Calendar Update

The CCS Board of Education has approved a split calendar for Reid Ross Classical for the 2020-2021 school year. We will begin the year on the traditional calendar and then switch back to the year-round calendar during the Winter Break. Students will observe a three-week intercession in December/January and again in the spring. The last day of school for students will be June 11th. I have attached the calendar here for your reference. It is also posted on the CCS website.

Student Schedules 2020-2021

Student Schedules for the 2020-2021 school year will be available for parents and students in PowerSchool after August 11th. You may log into the student account or the Parent Portal account to view your child's schedule. If you do not have a Parent Portal Account, please email Michele Little, Data Manager, at michelelittle@ccs.k12.nc.us and she can assist you.

Please note that all middle school schedules are subject to change based on the need to balance classes after actual enrollment in the first ten days. We ask for your patience in advance.

High School students may contact Mr. Mac at RangelMcLaurin@ccs.k12.nc.us to request a schedule change if needed. Requests will be approved based on availability.

Daily Schedule for Instruction

The Daily Schedule for Instruction is attached below. Due to our special situation and the fact that we share teachers between middle and high school, we will utilize our regular daily schedule for class periods.

Middle school classes will meet live for 30 minutes each day and the rest of the period will allow students to complete assigned work and practice for that class.

High school classes will meet live for one hour daily and the last 30 minutes will be for students to work independently or in small groups on assignments for their class.

Students are expected to be in attendance daily for live sessions and ready to participate.

Device and Materials Distribution

The County launched another survey to see who needs a device. If you did not complete the survey and need a device for your child, please come on one of the pickup dates and we will work to accommodate you. Devices will be deployed at the school on the following dates and times:

Tuesday August 11th 9:00- 12:00 PM

Thursday, August 13th 4:00- 7:00 PM

Parents will use the main driveway to pick-up devices on these dates.

School Meals

Students will be able to receive a school lunch and breakfast during the Plan C: Virtual Instruction daily from 11:00- 12:30 at Reid Ross Classical or other feeding sites. At this time all meals will be free for students during the month of August.

All parents are asked to go online to complete the lunch application for free/reduced lunch. Paper copies will be available and can be returned to any of the feeding sites during lunch hours. The link is below to complete the application online.

High School Parent Nights

We will have our annual Parent Nights for high school students the week of August 24 per the following schedule. These meetings will be held virtually and will begin at 6:30.

Middle School Title I Curriculum Night

We are planning to have our annual Title I Curriculum Night for middle school parents on September 1st at 6:00 PM. This will be virtual this year due to the current COVID situation. More information will come from your child's teachers in the next two weeks.


As required by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), Title I Part A. Information is available at our school to include but is not limited to the following:

· the school improvement plan

· qualifications of your child’s teacher and/or teacher assistant

· professional development opportunities for teachers and assistants to ensure highly qualified personnel

· opportunities for parent involvement and input

· the district improvement plan

· the district parent involvement policy

· the district report card and the school report card
