A Message from the Principal
Dear Holy Family Catholic School Community,
I hope that you have enjoyed the last few days of our beautiful spring weather! Spring reminds us of the life giving energy of the earth, and the hopeful and healing graces of Easter. Let us stay strong in our faith and remain beacons of hope for our families during this time.
This week the teachers are available to meet with you for Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences in lieu of a progress report. Please take the time to meet with your children’s teachers, it will feel good to connect (even virtually), and the mutual feedback will provide important information to help HFCS meet the needs of your students.
As you are fully aware, COVID-19 has required our HFCS community to engage in distance learning this quarter. This different style of teaching and learning has been both challenging and rewarding, and has resulted in a different type of grading than HFCS has had in previous quarters.
The grading policies for this quarter have taken into account various factors that have impacted learning, such as: students do not have the same type of continuous daily classroom access and support of their teachers, households have different access to technology and internet services, and a variety of family work situations.
The guiding principals for teacher assessment of student learning and student engagement (through homework, quizzes, tests and projects, and video conferencing sessions) for this quarter are:
1. Students will be given multiple opportunities to succeed.
· Teachers will allow homework, quizzes, tests and projects to be redone, if needed, to ensure student understanding and support authentic learning.
2. Less is more.
· Teachers will take less grades than previous quarters; the focus is on student comprehension over the whole quarter.
· Teachers will focus on specific skill sets to prepare students for their success at the next grade level.
3. Student engagement.
· Students will engage in the virtual learning process by attending video conferencing sessions and turning in their assignments.
This time of global challenge has revealed the blessings of our strong faith, committed community, and the generosity of spirit that HFCS is known for. Teachers, parents and students have worked together in many new ways to support the tradition of academic excellence at our beloved school. Thank you!
