We will be hosting a therapist from South Central Mental Health (SCMH) for our October Site Council Meeting on Thursday, October 21st at 4:00pm in the Meadowlark library.

SCMH has put together a menu of workshops under the umbrella of supporting Strong Communities for Trying Times. The 1 hour workshop, called Disorders Not Bad Behaviors, is for parents of elementary aged students and I felt like it might be a very good opportunity to hear from professionals in the field of mental health!

Please join us IN PERSON or on ZOOM!!!!

We're excited to announce that Allison Weide, fourth-grade teacher at Meadowlark Elementary, is the Andover Public Schools elementary level nominee for Kansas Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Weide, who is in her fifth year in Andover, is known for creative projects such as turning her students into travel agents to learn about social studies, A Night at the Oscars, when students dress for the red carpet, discuss the books they read during the year, and determine Best Villain, Best Lead Male Character, etc.; and a Passion Project, in which students complete a project near and dear to their heart. Congratulations, Mrs. Weide! Click here to watch a video featuring our KTOY nominee.

Opportunities for Giving and Receiving

Andover Caring and Sharing is a non profit organization that started over 20 years ago. Volunteers from local organizations assist families in our community who are in need during the holidays. Age appropriate gifts or gift cards and warm clothing items are provided for children, teenagers, and senior adults, as well as food boxes for the family with ingredients for a holiday dinner, including a turkey.

School counselors are asked to provide names and phone numbers of families in need. This is where I need your help. If your family is currently in hardship or likely to go without food and gifts this holiday season, please complete the form at the bottom and return to me by Monday, October 25th. This information will be confidential. I will submit your name, address, and phone number. Then, someone from Andover Caring and Sharing will contact you to verify your desire to participate and make pickup or delivery arrangements.

Due to COVID, we will not have our Christmas Shop; this year, we will contact families in advance regarding their gift requests and shop for them. The shopping model actually worked well last year, we were able to shop specifically for families requested needs. The families will be invited to pick up their gift boxes between December 14 – 16 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. The food boxes will be distributed at the Andover Fire Department on December 16. If transportation is not available, the Andover Fire and Police Department have volunteered to deliver.

We also encourage donations of food, gifts, gift cards, money, books, games, hand lotion, toiletries, etc. Volunteers are needed to help with food collection, gift sorting, gift wrapping, shopping, etc. Please let me know of any groups in your school that can help. It is also possible for a class or organization to adopt an entire family.

If you are interested in donating items or volunteering, please contact Michele Carlini at or 316-733-1423.

Sincerely, Mrs. Brooke Holcomb, Meadowlark Elementary School Counselor

Please email my name, address, and phone number to to participate in the Andover Caring and Sharing Traditional Holiday Program.

A "crew" is comprised of a teacher (aka a "captain") and a few students from each grade level. Each "crew" is going to meet and do various "crew" activities throughout the year. We are anxious to watch cross grade level relationships form and develop and for students to have deeper working relationships with other adults in the building.

At our "crew" meeting last week, students watched Read Aloud of The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors, then played Rock, Paper, Scissors with each other. The winner of each Crew will meet at the next Virtual Pep Rally & compete live for the MES Rock, Paper, Scissors Champion!!
