Color Run Fun
From The Principal
Happy Friday Hawkins,
Can you believe we are into October? It was such an incredible week here at Hawkins! The Color Run was an amazing event, raising the most money ever. The weather was a little iffy, but thanks to everyone's cooperation and understanding, I think we made it a great night. Thanks to all of our PTO, volunteers, teachers, and families for making it such a successful night. I know some were disappointed we did not stick to the times and they did not get to run with their class, but with the way the radar looked, we could get heavy rain at any time. The powder turns to paste with rain and we would have had to stop our activities. It was my decision to push things along to make sure we got as many classes in as possible if the rain came. We tried to stay out until the end so that if students showed up late they could still get colored. I want to give a huge thank you to our PTO board for all the hard work in planning an event like this, and a special thank you to Brandyn Mickus for jumping in and manning the grill.
We had our first evacuation drill today, in an effort to make sure we are prepared. We ran it as a gas leak in the boiler room, and did it during lunch/recess to test our readiness, (we have never done that before). The students did amazing and everyone was able to get out of the building and to the back fence in an orderly and quick manner. I was so impressed with the response, as was the police and fire department, who were a part of this.
Drop off and pick up are going very well, I will be adding a staff member to the kindergarten area Monday morning, as that area can get a little chaotic. I am always looking for parents, like our amazing Mike Traicoff, who would like to put on a vest and help keep us safe. Pictures are now available to order, see information below. It looks like a beautiful weekend, I hope you all get to enjoy it. Go Blue!

Bus Information
Parents...PLEASE NOTE: You cannot pick up your Maltby student at Hawkins, Spencer, or Hilton Elementary UNLESS you have a current student attending on of those schools. Not only can their parking lots not handle the extra cars after school, it is also a safety concern in case of an emergency. Thank you for understanding.

The determination will be based upon individual fitness to have responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of children. Providing false information is grounds for immediate volunteer denial.
Just In Case Clothes
For the 23/24 school year, we are recommending ALL students, grades JK-4, have an extra set of just in case clothes to keep in their backpack or locker in case of accidents or emergencies (i.e. bathroom accidents, playground mishaps, lunchroom spills, ripped or torn clothes, etc.). An extra set here at school saves parents an extra trip to Hawkins during the school day. We appreciate your help!!!
Michigan School Meals Program
Brighton Area Schools will participate in the Michigan School Meals Program for the 2023-2024 school year. Michigan School Meals is a state-funded program that allows for all public school students to receive meals at no cost. For more information, see the flier below or visit

Parent Connect Reported Absences
A new feature in Parent Connect will allow you to enter your student’s absence. Simply log into parent connect and click on the link Report Absence. The Report Absence link will open a screen for you to complete. If you have more than one student check the name of the student for whom an absence is being submitted. Add the applicable dates. If you check the All Day flag attendance will be submitted for the am and pm periods. If you do not check the All Day flag times must be entered and attendance will be submitted for whichever periods meet during the time range (based on period schedule).
Reporting An Absence on Attendance Line
If your child is going to be absent, please call the Hawkins attendance Line (810-299-3900 then press 2). Please state your child's name, teacher, date of absence and reason for the absence (type of illness, doctor appointment, vacation etc). If your child has been diagnosed with a specific ailment (COVID, strep throat, pink eye, influenza, chicken pox) please state that in the voicemail message. If your child has not been diagnosed with a specific ailment but is having specific symptoms please let us know the symptoms your child is experiencing. Hawkins appreciates your help!
