Culture...as defined by Dr. La Salle
Are we providing a space where our students can tell their whole story?
Listening to Dr. Tamika La Salle
So what do we know about culturally diverse students? They are less likely to have their academic and social needs met, less likely to have their cultural experience and background validated, and less likely to have their cultural qualities respected or affirmed. So how do we seek to understand, respect, and value the similarities and differences in our Lincoln School community? One relevant point that came up during the discussion was around grandparents or extended family members raising our students. How do we ensure that our community is inclusive of all types of families? What is the narrative that we tell ourselves about our students?
Remember that words have power. And what we say about our students and what we say to them is heard by them. What messages do we send with our nonverbal signals? What messages do we send with our words? Dr. La Salle probed us to consider the students that may move throughout the day and not be said hello to, or do not hear words of encouragement. It is so important to acknowledge our students for who they are and where they are at because this does not always happen for them at home.
How do you build relationships with your students? We spent some time writing down how we defined ourselves and then needed to try and share who we were with someone we didn’t know, and COULD NOT use any of the information we had written down. How has education changed and how does this impact our relationship with our students? Dr. La Salle asked us to consider what we would have thought as a child if the teacher said they would call our parents. She then asked us to consider how that response from our students would differ today. Instead of feeling defeated by this, we need to use our positive school climate and relationships with our students to gain the leverage that once came in a very different way.

SWIS Overview
Some Information About SWIS
We learned about the many logistical pieces of the SWIS system. As you know, any student behavior referrals should be shared with administration via the Office Discipline Referral (ODR) forms. With so many new staff members in the building and inconsistency of using SWIS, we know that this may still seem unknown. We are on it to provide more information soon!
We should also be heading to the digital version of tracking student behavior soon. NEPBIS admittedly shares that SWIS is not very flexible and that it is important for us to enter data efficiently. When we're ready for the paperless version of SWIS, there are some great videos to share with all of you.
Want SWIS training? When paperless SWIS does roll out, we will provide opportunities for training all staff. Feel free to make suggestions for how you'd like this to happen!! We will ultimately all be trained to be Referral Entry Only (REO) users, so that we can all enter our own data. We are not sure who the reviewers will be yet, but we hope to know soon!
Once we start to have data...
- We can share the Drill Down technique!
- We can draft problem statements from the data!
- We can start to think of Solution Development and Action Planning!
