Anti-Bullying Laser Light Show Assembly
The Prismatic Magic laser bullying prevention assembly program was such a fun and exciting way for our students to learn about respect and tolerance during our Great Kindness Challenge week. They emphasized and encouraged teamwork, character, and consideration of others, as well as open and honest communication. Using rocking music and dancing animations to keep students laser-focused, they taught students about the signs of bullying. The educational performer used humor to reinforce the significance of teamwork and of considering other people’s perspectives. Our school assembly reminded students that positive character counts and that everyone can do the right thing by contributing to bullying prevention efforts.
2nd-3rd Grade Theater Showcase
We could not be more proud of our 2nd and 3rd grade performers! A big thank you to everyone who were able to come in to watch our performance today. Students performed their pieces in front of our audience, acting, dancing and singing.

Provident’s Art Contest

Everyone worked so hard on their 'My Favorite Thing About Hoboken' art contest drawings. More than 200 drawings from all elementary schools in Hoboken were submitted to be judged for the 2 winning prizes.....and one of the winners is from Connors Elementary! Congratulations, Macie Nizgoda, for winning the 2nd through 3rd grade prize! We are so proud of you and all our Connors artists!
NJIT eSTEM
Our NJIT eSTEM teams were introduced to this year's challenge on January 17, 2023. The teams started brainstorming ideas about environmental issues that they want to tackle and will need to design a solution for it as well. The challenge also requires the teams to use a BBC Micro-Bit to help collect data. Our students will have to learn to program these BBC Micro-Bits to collect information that will help them design their solution. The eSTEM teams are led by Coaches Hillary Quist and Michael Caniglia-Robilio and supported by Hoboken High School student volunteers. On January 24, 2023, the teams met their NJIT mentor via Google Meet so that they can ask clarifying questions about the challenge in order to narrow down their ideas. They also had a chance to see what the BBC Micro-Bit can do to help them think of ways they can use it to collect their information.

Connors Class Learning Activities
Kindergarten
Ms. Fleischer, Ms. Watson, Mrs. Schain, Ms. Bartolotti, Mrs. White, Ms. Romanowski and Mr. Donovan
Math: This week kindergartners learned various ways to make the numbers 5-10 by playing token toss. Students were given red and yellow counters. Students shook the counters and spilled them on the table. Then, they had to count the amount of red and yellow counters to make a complete addition sentence. Students reviewed solving addition problems and completed their Linkit Assessment. Way to go Kindergarten!
Readers Workshop: Another fantastic week in Kindergarten Reader's Workshop. The letter of the week was Hh. Students were able to distinguish words that begin with Hh and did not begin with Hh. The sight word of the week was the word my. Kindergarten friends came up with amazing sight word sentences. We also read the story My Garden and discussed the story elements and details. The Kindergarten Team is SO IMPRESSED with how well our students are doing on their spelling tests! Keep up the great work KOALIFIED KINDERGARTENERS!
Writers Workshop: This week we finally finished our Narrative writing pieces! We each wrote a personal narrative about an event that made us so happy! The students added juicy details and adjectives to their stories! They used their writers checklist to help them edit their story. We then switched with a peer so another set of eyes could review their work! Lastly, we had teacher conferences with each student to help guide their writing. Then we wrote our final drafts! We also learned all about pronouns and how they take the place of a noun. The students have been fantastic at identifying pronouns in sentences!
Social Studies: Within Social Studies this week students are learning about our community. We are discussing the different places that make up our community along with their importance. Students focused on the neighborhood surrounding our school and we made a list of everything we could see if we were to walk around it. With this students are comparing Maplewood (the neighborhood within our Young Citizens book) to Hoboken. Students are noticing that even though Hoboken and Maplewood both have parks they don’t share the same name and they look different. We will continue to compare and contrast the two communities next week.
Science: This week, kindergarten classes had a special, virtual presentation from the Veolia water company. Our guest presenter taught students about the different forms of water during each of the four seasons. After the lesson which included a read aloud story, students completed the sentence stem, "When I think of water..." and illustrated a picture to match their sentence. This guest presentation paired perfectly with our current science unit, which is all about weather!
1st Grade
Ms. Sheridan, Ms. Klag, Ms. Vayda, Ms. White and Ms. Stinson
Math: During math this week, students completed the mid-year winter Link IT assessment. We all did a great job trying our best to answer questions. We also learned about comparing two different lengths by telling how much longer or shorter one fish is to another. We had fun working together to measure fish and deciding whether or not they were a keeper! Next week we will continue learning this concept by writing equations to find how many more/how many less.
ELA: This week in ELA our essential question was, "What is a folktale?" We discussed what story elements make it a folktale. We focused on identifying the moral of a story. There were many books we read that helped us look for clues to find the moral of the story. We will continue to practice this during guided reading. Students also learned about cause and effect events. They took turns thinking of their own cause and effect events that could happen in real life as well. In phonics, we learned all about the sounds of soft c and g. We learned a word has a soft c or g if it is followed by e, i, or y. In grammar, we reviewed inflectional endings -ed and -ing when writing sentences. Our high frequency words for the week were: any, from, happy, once, so, upon. In ELA we also completed our winter Linkit winter assessment.
Social Studies: This week in Social Studies we continued working on chapter four in our Young Citizens textbook. We discussed how laws were made. The students learned that citizens or people who live in a town help make laws. First graders even learned what the word democracy means. For Article- a- Day, the students learned about all different desserts around the world. They had fun learning about this and sharing which dessert they would like best. Since this week is the Great Kindness Challenge, the students participated in a very special project. During one of our Social Studies periods we colored and wrote a Valentines Day card for senior citizens in our community. The children really enjoyed creating such special cards. They wrote very sweet messages on the back. This was a great way to show a small act of kindness this week!
2nd Grade
Ms. Garcia, Ms. Rinaldi, Ms. Pokorny, Ms. Criqui and Ms. Romanowski
ELA: This week our super second graders continued to learn about character’s perspectives (point of view) and sequencing while reading fiction stories. The essential question for this text set was “What can we see in the sky?” They were able to identify the character’s perspective while reading “Mr. Putter and Tabby See the Stars”. The phonics focus this week was long e. Students continued to practice sequencing while working on their Friday craftivity, which was to put the events from “Mr. Putter and Tabby See the Stars” in order. In writing, students finished working on their personal narratives.
Math: Second graders had another great week in math! We started the week with Linkit! Form B. Students did an amazing job and all of their hard work paid off. We continued to practice solving addition and subtraction problems with many strategies. We used number lines, pictures, strips and stickers, and the standard algorithm. We can’t wait to keep learning new strategies for addition and subtraction next week.
Social Studies: This week in social studies, we wrapped up our school improvement plan. We presented our posters and opinion writing to Ms. Addi & Mr. Hamlin. Ms. Rinaldi's class addressed some improvements that could be made to the boys and girls bathrooms. Ms. Garcia's class addressed improvements that could be made in order for Connors students to have a special treat once a month. Ms. Pokorny's class addressed improvements that could be made to have the playground be a better place for everyone who uses it. The same day as our presentation, Ms. Addi & Mr. Hamlin went to work to make some of the changes suggested to the boys and girls bathrooms. We learned by taking social action, we can make a change in our school community!
Special Celebrations: On Thursday, we had our Bullying Prevention Laser Light Show School Assembly. We learned how to say the following words in sign language: respect, inspire, grow, help, & trust. We also learned how to sign the phrase "Do the right thing!". We had such a blast! On Friday, we had our Theater Showcase. Everyone did a wonderful job acting, dancing, and singing. Congratulations!
Science: This week in science, students compared and contrasted the various forms of water found on Earth, including rivers, lakes, oceans and ponds. This also included a review of the water cycle. Classes also had a special, virtual presentation from the Veolia water company. Our guest presenter taught students about states of matter and the various forms water can become. Students then completed a sorting activity at the conclusion of the presentation. We finished the week by beginning Unit 5- Changes to the Earth's Surface, as students began learning about weathering and erosion. We will continue with this next week as well.
Ms. Criqui's Class:
Ela- This week in math, students took the winter LinkIt assessment. During this assessment, students read a variety of different passages and then answered questions based on the texts. The teacher read each passage and all the directions aloud. Additionally, there were many brain breaks incorporated throughout the assessment to allow for some wiggle breaks! Students also learned the long e sound and practiced reading and writing words that contain that sound.
Math- This week in math, students took the winter LinkIt assessment. During this assessment, students answered a variety of questions which included addition, subtraction, place value and graphs. Again, all directions and problems were read aloud and students took many brain breaks. Additionally, students continued to practice how to add two digit numbers, how to write two digit numbers in expanded form and how to count a number when shown hundreds, tens and ones cubes.

3rd Grade
Ms. Januse, Ms. Hall, Ms. Schmidt, Ms.Criqui, Ms. Layson, Ms. Goodwin, Ms. White
and Ms. Stinson
Math: This week, students continued to explore perimeter. We also revisited an old skill, area. Students were finding the area of irregular shapes and using different tetrominoes during Math workshop. While using the tetrominoes to cover the space of a rectangle, students were able to practice measuring the area of a shape with square inches.
ELA: This week, students read chapters 13, 14, and 15 of Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. They identified sequence of events, created summaries, and asked and answered text-based questions. In addition to taking Linkit, students also focused on comparing and contrasting multiple fiction texts in order to create, edit, and revise two Literary Analysis writing pieces.
Social Studies: This week students wrapped up our third unit by completing an authentic writing task. Students will write a narrative describing a day in the life as a Lenni Lenape child. Students will demonstrate what they have learned about the Lenni Lenape culture, home-life, community, successes and challenges. Third graders were able to use their creativity, as well as the knowledge gained throughout this unit, to create incredible writing pieces!
Third Grade Thrills: This week third graders saw an incredible light show that fit perfectly into our week of kindness! During the show, students learned how to do the R.I.G.H.T. thing (Respect, Inspire, Grow, Help and Trust). The show emphasized the power of being kind to other people and using teamwork. Teamwork and respect was modeled through the laser show's lights, flying, and dancing. What a cool way to wrap up our kindness week, and a great way to continue demonstrating kindness throughout the rest of the year!
4th Grade
Ms. Rodriguez, Ms. Schulz, Ms. Goodwin, Ms. Layson and Mr. Donovan
ELA: This week Phenomenal 4th Graders completed their mid-year benchmark testing with the ELA Link It assessment. They were focused and applied close reading strategies to do their best and demonstrate skills they have learned this year when reading narratives, drama, poetry, and expository texts. Readers continued read our core text "What Would She Do?" in order to learn about trailblazing women from the past and present - this week highlighted Harriet Tubman, Marie Curie, and Amelia Earhart.
Math: 4th grade Mathematicians participated in the district Link-It testing this week. Students worked on a winter project that helped them to review skills. Students were planning a mock class trip where they were asked to research where they would go, how they would get there and what they would need for the trip. Students were asked to use advanced multiplication skills to calculate the cost of the trip. Students were eager to plan and come up with a total cost. They truly engrossed themselves in the project and were very creative.
Great Kindness Challenge: Students have been reading about community in Reading Wonders and it paired perfectly with the kindness project this week. Students were eager to create Valentines for the senior community center. During Social Studies, students participated in class discussions and activities focusing on the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, care, and citizenship. They also enjoyed creating Valentine's cards for the elderly as part of the PTO community project.
Science: This week we were so happy to welcome Mr. Donovan back! We have been researching energy sources to find out how the resource is formed, how it generates electricity, if it is renewable or nonrenewable and how its use can affect the environment. Students also discussed how the energy sources are alike and/or different. We enjoyed learning about energy transfer and conversion!
5th Grade
Ms. Ortiz, Ms. Schultes, Ms. Rodriguez, Ms. Layson and Ms. Hirniak
ELA: This week 5th graders continued to read our core novel, Esperanza Rising. Within our novel, as well as in our Reading Wonders curriculum, we focused on figuring out the central idea and key details and various problems and solutions, as well as figurative language. In addition, students worked hard on their ELA Link It assessment.
Math: This week the 5th graders had the opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency in 5th grade Math by taking the Math Link It. Students did a phenomenal job. Students also engaged in Math to review for their Unit 4 Test. Students either worked in a small group with their teacher practicing real world multi-step word problems or engaged in a multiplication and division carousel and after some time, groups switched. This allowed students to practice standard multiplying and dividing but also allowing them to apply those skills to real world scenarios.
Social Studies: This week students were able to begin an industrial revolution invention project. Students were able to choose from a list of inventions and then had to create a Google Slides presentation on three of the inventions. It allowed students to apply what we have learned but it also allowed them to use their research skills.
Science: This week in 5th grade science students prepared for their unit 3 test on systems in space. Students worked hard on completing various review activities in pairs, as well as watched a few clips in order to make connections to real world examples.
ARCIERO AND SIVO'S ALL STARS
Science: Before starting our new units, we decided to have a fun day making slime! Students enjoyed this activity as they got to practice measuring ingredients and testing out what would work best to make the stretchiest slime.

We are looking forward to their presentations!

P.E. with Mr. Favino
In PE this week we shifted our focus to separate lifetime fitness activities in both the K-2 and 3-5 levels. We introduced 4 different yoga poses in class and paired that with different aerobic and strength fitness activities. Students were able to recall each yoga pose and as we went through the week it was easy to tell that students were getting more comfortable with each pose. We discussed the benefits to yoga and mindfulness throughout the week and discovered that yoga is not only a form of exercise, but a way to relax and encourage self positivity.

Music with Mr. Azzarto
Hey Connors families,
The week of January 23rd they students at Connors were busy learning about the ledger lines, recorders, the grand staff and so much more. Let’s not forget plenty of singing!
In Ms. Klag’s class, the students began identifying notes that are above and below the music staff. This may sound easy, but it can be very challenging counting lines and spaces using the music alphabet. Remember we only have seven letters and they repeat. Does anyone know what letter the music alphabet ends with? Ask your children, they should know! Here is Christian, showing off that he knows that the note that is one step above the treble clef is G!
As all know, student participation is imperative to the learning process. In music, there are many ways students get involved in class participation. Choral singing is one of them and before the students begin the singing activity in every music class, they must warm up their vocal chords. In the upper grades, a student is chosen to play the computer piano along with me as we do our Solfege warm ups. It is a lot of fun and the students are so good at playing the virtual piano! Alexa is spot on with her performance on the Do- Re - Mi’s!

Art with Ms. Capalbo
This week in art we are all expanding our knowledge of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Kindergarten through Second grade are exploring how to create contrast and emphasis in their work, while Third through Fifth grade are being introduced to form. Collectively we are creating artworks for our neon glow in the dark party! The neon fluorescent paint will glow under black lights!
Passport to Learning
This week we worked on the hip chest and neck isolations during our warm-up. Then we worked on some across the floor foot work while make sure the students understood musicality while going across the floor.
