November 2018

From Mr. Collier: Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians:

During the month of October, there were many activities and events to promote student safety at Memorial School. Our Character Education Committee put together two weeks of events to promote kindness, respect, and friendship for one another. Thank you to the Memorial Community and staff who encouraged and participated in these days with our students.

As the outdoor temperature continues to decrease, our students will continue to go outside for recess. Please make sure that your children are dressed appropriately with pants, coats, and proper footwear. We do not want them to be cold while they are playing outside.

This month, there are several days that the school will be closed due to the NJEA Convention and Thanksgiving recess. These are wonderful opportunities for our students to spend quality time with their families. During these days, please remember to encourage your child to read or read together as a family. I encourage you to ask your child questions about what they are reading or make some connections from your experiences.

November's common theme of "being thankful" provides an opportunity for all families to be reflective and give thanks for what or who they have in their lives. However, we should make this an everyday theme. We all strive to make the best out of each day, even when we feel the world is against us. On those trying days, take a moment to pause, reflect and celebrate the positive and happiness in your life. I constantly think of Mrs. Donna Myhre, a former Fieldstone teacher, who recently lost her battle with ALS. No matter how hard her days were, Donna always remained positive, strong, and never gave up on her happiness and dreams. Mrs. Myhre is truly a role model for all of us to follow, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with her and learn so much about life, happiness and staying positive.

The staff and I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. We hope that your family has a wonderful and memorable time celebrating with loved ones and special friends.

Have a great month!

From Mrs. Dugan: Health Update

New Jersey mandates vision screening for students in grades K, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8. These screenings have always been done in the health office using a standard vision tester or wall chart that screens for near and/or distance vision.

This year, we are expanding our vision screening through a cost-free program offered by the Lions Club. Several surrounding districts have had great success with this new program and we are enthusiastic about trying it here in Montvale.

The screening process will be implemented and supervised by our school nurses and conducted here at Memorial. The procedure uses new photographic technology and each student will be screened for hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism, anisometropia and strabismus. This screening is performed from a distance of 3 feet; it requires no medication or preparation and is painless and comprehensive.

As in the past, irregular screening results will be sent to parents whose responsibility it is to follow up with a complete eye examination for their child.

The comprehensive vision screening by the Lions Club will occur on Wednesday, December 12th at 9 am.

Parents may always opt-out of state mandated school screenings by contacting Mrs. Dugan at mdugan@montvalek8.org by December 5th.

Montvale PD Halloween Safety

This week, the Montvale Police Department met with all of the students at Memorial School. Their focus was to educate them on what to do if they are approached by a stranger. All students were very receptive to the lessons and know that if they see anything, they should say something to a teacher or parent right away. The police department also gave the students some tips on how to be safe during Halloween. It is wonderful when the Montvale Police Department spends time with our students. Thanks again for your continued support!
