About Templo Mayor

Temple Mayor was a temple in the capital city of the Aztecs, Tenochtitlan, in what is now Mexico City.

In fact, much of Mexico City was built over Tenochtitlan, but some original sites remain, including the Great Temple, known as Temple Mayor, which was the most important building in the city.

Temple Mayor was built by the people of Tenochtitlan as a shrine to the deities Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc. Tenochtitlan was originally established in around 325 AD and was a thriving city with around 200,000 people until 1521, when it was conquered by the Spanish.
