CATCHING THEM IN THE ACT
A CONSERVATORY PREP NEWS LETTER
WEEK OF NOVEMBER 9-13, 2015
Family dinner this Sunday evening (November 15, 2015) at Buleria, located at 2051 Hollywood Boulevard. We will meet at the restaurant in Hollywood at 5:30 PM. Can't wait for the Flamenco dancing.
Dr. Weiner was a featured speaker at the Florida Alliance for Arts Integration Symposium, held at Nova Southeastern University. She spent the morning training teachers to integrate the arts with a traditional lesson plan.
Lights, action, costumes, music, singing are not enough to describe the experience of going to the opera. Our students who attended Barber of Seville had a wonderful time. We were also lucky to have snagged the box seats in the orchestra section. Looking forward to Norma in January.
There are still openings for students to attend the Model UN training at FIU on Saturday, November 21st. Please let the school know via email if you will be attending.

High-School Physical Education
Ryan and Kyle hit the gym and pump some iron for independent PE class.
Book Art

Middle-School Science
CPS middle-schoolers are delving into Ayurvedic gardening. This week the students wrapped up their essential oils presentations. They will move on to building their knowledge of gardening as they learn about Ayurvedic plants and their anatomy.
Geometry
Geometry class expands our study of polygons, as we explore quadrilaterals and their properties. Students created their own polygons, classified them, then calculated and measured the interior angles.
Physics
In the early days before gunpowder was invented, ancient military commanders used large, powerful throwing machines called catapults to help them lay siege to castles and forts. Students in Physics built their own catapults and designed experiments to test their limits.
Environmental Biology
"What did the Easter Islander who cut down the last palm tree on the island say while he was doing it?" “What were the thought processes and discussions among the inhabitants of Easter Island, leading up to the removal of the last remnants of forest?” "I can’t help feeling that this is highly relevant to us today, as the world seems shrunk to the size of a small island in the vast ocean of space." These are some of the questions and thoughts our Environmental Biology students are exploring in this unit.
US History
The students are participating in a virtual re-enactment of the Stamp Act, and the First and Second Continental Congresses. They are debating issues such as taxation, parliamentary representation, and liberty.
Genius Hour
The students are completing their scripts for the Odyssey of the Mind competition.
European History
The students have begun the "Game of Thrones." The first competition is to create a time capsule for the students' assigned medieval characters.
Pre-Algebra
English III
This week we continued to read, as well as analyze, "The Crucible." We are writing our own modern one-act play, based on our version of the witch hunts. We continue to incorporate theatre into our classes, and it's always fun to see the creative juices flow. Working together to write a play has brought out everyone's personality.
Math through Music
This week we are learning how to add up the notes in music and how to write them.
SAT Prep
The study group is reinforcing and practicing standard written English, as it is tested by the SAT.
Middle-School English
The subject affects two objects in this original sentence, team-crafted by the students: "Selena Gomez kicks (1) Justin Beiber to the (2) curb." This. Is. Grr-ammah!
Math for College Readiness
Yakira is peer-teaching as Ashley solves systems of linear inequalities, both by hand and by using the TI-84 graphic calculator.

Ancient Civilizations
Classical sitar provides ambience as the students examine and draw various details of the Taj Mahal. The mixture of Persian and Hindu architectural forms is what we first see as we approach the seemingly white monument, but a closer look uncovers the colorful inlaid stone of the Himalayan lowlands.
Middle-School Latin
Richard chooses Consilio Absit Discordia (Let discord be absent from your deliberations), as the motto of his personalized coat of arms. Here he is making a preliminary sketch before testing color-schemes.
English I
Kaitlyn and Matthew react to one of Gustave Dore's harrowing illustrations of Dante's Inferno. Depicted are the sinners who squandered their free will in life, and as a consequence are inanimate shrubs in Hell.
Enrichment
The high-school ran four separate classes Friday afternoon: Ryan L. And Kyle taught Teamwork Painting, Rebecca and Yakira taught piano and voice, Ryan S. held a workout class, and Ashley and Dani taught jewelry-making.
