History of Jazz
The history of jazz is in the United States. After the abolition of slavery in 1863 came the now familiar musical genres jazz and blues. These had their origin in the African rhythms that had brought the former slaves. Many of them moved away from the plantations and sought refuge in the cities. New Orleans was such a town that was flooded with young people of color who were looking for work. Due to the large influx of workers from high unemployment emerged. What they did was sing and make music on the streets. Thus arose the first jazz, which was first primarily instrumental.
Despite the strategic location of New Orleans on both the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, the city was fairly isolated and difficult to reach by road. In 1928 and in 1929 opened two bridges across the narrowest part of the Lake Pontchartrain northeast of the city. In 1935 opened the Huey P. Long Bridge, the first bridge over the Mississippi River in the state of Louisiana. Today, the US runs about 90 there. The first highway in New Orleans was a part of what is now I-10 and US 90, the Pontchartrain Expressway which passed on the Crescent City Connection and continuing as the Westbank Expressway in Marrero. The first part was the connection of the Crescent City Connection at both ends, which were opened in 1958. This was possible Louisiana of the first highway. In 1960 the rest of the Pontchartrain Expressway was completed by the center and the Westbank Expressway in Marrero. The first section of I-10 outside of downtown New Orleans opened around 1960, when the Industrial Canal Bridge was opened on I-10. On August 30, 1956 the first bridge of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway opened to traffic on May 10, 1969 a second, so this is actually a highway. In 1965 the Twin Span Bridge opened northeast of the city, which I-10 runs. The motorway network in the 80's and 90 limited extended by the addition of I-310 west and I-510 east of New Orleans. Both highways were originally planned as I-410, the southern ring road of New Orleans that was never built.

Food in New Orleans
Residents of New Orleans consider food as one of the important things in life. One cooks spicy here in a mix of French, Spanish , African and Cajun cuisine . Gumbo (a thick soup) and Jambalaya (a kind of paella ) are the basics . Creole food comes mainly from the Caribbean , with rice and red beans ; Cajun is the legacy of the French-speaking immigrants from Canada . For food it also takes time : it starts late and goes long. There are also many trendy restaurants that combine everything. We tried Nola, on the advice of eettijdschriften , but it was disappointing. Rather try to find a somewhat authentic restaurant. The problem is that all tourists eat what they put gain and so there is more bad than good quality.

The occasion is the same as our carnival : the last day before the beginning of Lent , forty days before Easter.
