SHS Band Leads the 24th Annual Lighted Farm Implement Parade
Check out this video of the SHS Band's opening number at the very beginning of the 24th Annual Sandusky Lighted Farm Implement Parade. The parade begins and ends at SHS each year and our band is a staple of this great local tradition.
SHS Key Club--Diamond Trail Fitness Project
Our SHS Key Club--a student-affiliate of our local Kiwanis Club, along with other students and student groups have been fundraising to bring permanent exercise equipment stations to the Diamond Trail. The goal is to raise the funds for sixteen separate pieces of equipment that would be spread along the mile-long Diamond Trail, enhancing the outdoor fitness options for our community. Below you can find more information on the project, check out the stations we are seeking to install, and have a look at the Key Club's float in the Lighted Implement Parade. This was designed to promote our fundraising efforts and it was the first SHS student float ever entered into this parade!
RRP Rally
On December 1st, SHS held a Rally for its Redskin Rewards Program members. To break away from the traditional "sit-in-the-bleachers" assembly, the students organizing the assembly arranged for multiple dodge ball contests as well as the chance to use one of four cornhole courts that were set up on the indoor track. Students that didn't attend the Rally were able to get some extra help from their teachers, improving their grades in the process.
Brigadier General (Ret.) Michael Peplinski Speaks to Business Math Student
One of the best features of Mr. Lasecki's Business Math course is the the guest speakers that students invite into the classroom to share their life experiences, unique perspectives, and advice for the future. A very special recent guest speaker was retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Michael Peplinski, the uncle of current SHS Senior Landen Peplinski.
Expert Advice in Health Class
Students in Freshman Health at SHS have been learning about the importance of nutrition and physical activity. Recently, Charlene Biessel, a registered dietitian for McKenzie Health System, spoke to the class about healthy eating habits. Students learned of the dangers of eating too many foods high in added sugar. Ms. Biessel promoted healthy eating options such as eating fruit rather than drinking fruit juice as well as prepared meals with whole ingredients rather than eating boxed and frozen foods that contain added sugar.
#NoShaveNovember Fundraiser
These seven gentlemen participated in #NoShaveNovember, giving up their razors for the month to bring awareness to mens' health causes. These staff members (and some others) donated a total of $220 to be delivered to the P.C.U.P.S Foundation, a group that was founded by SHS Alumni. For more information on P.C.U.P.S please visit this link:
HS STEM Class Works on Towers
Our HS STEM students continue to enage in hands-on learning under the direction of Mr. Lieber. Here, students had to engineer and build a tower according to precise specifications. The towers were later tested for load-bearing capabilities and scored on efficiency.
English III Students Engage in Deep Discussion During Socratic Circles
We seek to take our students beyond memorization and into deeper learning opportunities. In Mrs. Carlson's English III classes, each Friday is a chance to participate in Socratic Circles. These circles are formal discussions, based on multiple texts, in which the leader asks open-ended questions. Within the context of the discussion, students listen closely to the comments of others, thinking critically for themselves, and articulate their own thoughts and their responses to the thoughts of others. They have become a favorite part of English class for many of Mrs. Carlson's students!
JH STEM Class Engages in Computer Programming
Students in the 7th/8th Grade STEM class had the chance to design their own Google Logos using the computer programming website Scratch. Scratch is free to use and it offers a great basic introduction into the world of computer programming.
SHS Band Makes their Apple Pies
Many of you have purchased an apple pie from the SHS Band over the years, so take a quick peek into how they are made! The band made 1600 apple pies in eight hours. This was accomplished with over 150 band students, parents, and friends. A big THANK YOU goes out to all of the volunteers as well as community members who purchased pies. The funds will be used to purchase new marching band uniforms, and to help send the band to perform in Walt Disney World in February of 2019.
SHS Art Program Continues to Amaze
Under the guidance of Mrs. Jacobs--"Ma", to most--SHS students create beautiful and awe-inspiring pieces of art. Pictured here is SHS Senior Emily Hopkin putting some finishing touches on one of her pieces that will be displayed at the Art Show in April.
More Community Service
Have you seen the caroler on the Sanilac County Courthouse lawn yet? Her bright blue coat is thanks to SHS Sophomore Hailey Bund, who gave her a make-over before she was placed out for the community to enjoy this Christmas season. Our students find a great many ways to give back to the community they love!
Technology in the Classroom
Pictured below are Mrs. Jones' 8th Grade Math Students using Quizlet Live to prepare for an upcoming test on inequalities. We find our students are often more engaged in their studies when we can utilize newer and exciting technology!
Send In Your Box Tops!
We collect Box Tops at SHS and use them to purchase new library books. Please consider clipping these at home and sending them to the SHS office with your student. Your support is greatly appreciated!
