Resources for Administering the Assessment
2017-2018
The art of teaching reading is complex. There are so many elements and dimensions of reading instruction that sometimes we can feel overwhelmed. We are at the beginning of our story mountain, climbing to the top. We have gained valuable information to help highlight our students' strengths and target their areas of need. We will continue to instill a love for reading and help to develop fluent readers and deep thinkers. We are climbing our mountain and when we get to the top, the view we will see in our classrooms will all be worth it!

WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE THE ASSESSMENT?
Preview the Key Understandings and Prompts- Become familiar with the prompts and the key understandings in the text.
Get to Know the Comprehension Rubric- This tool will assist you in scoring the comprehension conversation and keep our scoring consistent and accurate. Keep in mind, if you are scoring a 3, this means that NO teaching is needed for the student to think within the text, beyond the text, and about the text.

TIPS TO FOLLOW DURING THE ASSESSMENT
- Be concise in the language of your prompts so you don't unintentionally lead your student to the answer.
- Be careful not to answer questions yourself or lead students to the answer. For example, "Is that why the boy was sad?" or "And how do these adaptations help this animal?"
- You should paraphrase a prompt only once, but be careful not to change the intention of the prompt or question.
- If a student has indicated some knowledge with only a few words, you can say: "Say more about that."
- If a student is reading the text word for word, you should say: "Can you say that in your own words?"
Referring to the Text:
- Allow the student to look back in the text, only if the student initiates.
- Unless prompted, avoid directing the student to a particular part of the book.
We want our students to succeed and do their best. By following these guidelines, we will be able to help them achieve this by gathering accurate and informative data to drive our instruction! This is what will truly help them become a stronger reader.
