Inspiring Quotes for Those Really Hard Parenting Moments...
Instead of questioning the way we handle things (and feeling guilty), what if we looked at those moments as our children showing us where we need to grow—raising us up. What a gift that would be.
Ashley Soderlund, Ph.D.Often when parenting is really hard it is because we are so immersed in it — the dishes, the laundry, the big unregulated emotions from our children whose brains are still growing — that it is near impossible to take a broader view. Yet, it is that exact ability — to take a broader view — to shift your perspective, that makes all the difference in how we experience parenting and how we react or — how we consciously respond.
There is no such thing as a perfect parent, so just be a real one.
Sue Atkins
Our kids don’t need us to be perfect Pinterest parents — they just need us, as we are. It’s really as simple as that. Our children require our consistent presence in their lives, the ability to say sorry when we make mistakes, and to just simply be there.
Be the calm you want to see in your child.
Renee Jain
Let’s face it — when it comes to the child-parent relationship, there is one person who has mature self-control and one smaller person with considerably less self-control. The result is that as a parent, we not only have to regulate ourselves, but we also have to help our kids regulate. Depending on age, temperament, and what’s going on in their life, our kids are not yet well-equipped to handle disappointment, and frustration, be able to calm down, focus on a goal, evaluate options or make well-thought-out decisions. We are the ones who can model for our kids how to have emotions, accept them, and move through them.
Do the best you can do until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.
Maya Angelou
Be gentle with yourself as you develop and grow as a parent. We learn from our mistakes if we allow ourselves to learn. If we worry with endless guilt about our errors in parenting, we don’t see how we can grow. Allow yourself to make mistakes and allow yourself to learn from those mistakes. Open yourself up to doing better the next time around. Open yourself up to growth!

Sharyland ISD's Back to School Plan
Back to School Success!
Get in contact with your child's teacher(s):
- Make a point of introducing yourself & learning about class activities & expectations for the school year. Find out how each teacher prefers to communicate. Our district uses the Remind app to communicate information about campus & classroom information. Your parent Skyward account also provides the email to your child's teacher. If you need any help in using the Remind app or Skyward, call your campus Community Liaison or the front office for assistance.
Get in the groove:
- Establish healthy at-home routines for school days, such as consistent waking times and “getting-ready” patterns. Decide on a regular homework time and create a comfortable, quiet work space. Set betimes that allow elementary age kids to get 10 to 12 hours of sleep; teens should get 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 hours of sleep.
- Use a free online calendar or a smartphone app to help you keep track of everyone's school, activities, and work schedules. (Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook Calendar, etc.)
Pack smart:
- Make sure your child's backpack never weighs more than 10 to 20 percent of his body weight; heavy packs can strain developing muscles and joints. Encourage your child to use both straps, and tighten them, so the pack hangs close to the body, about two inches above your child's waist.
If you have any concerns, reach out to your child's teacher, either through Remind or by calling the front office to schedule a phone conference.

Counseling Department
The month of August & September's counseling lessons at the campuses will be focused on Empathy.
This month, we’re focusing on empathy and challenging students to make sure that everyone they interact with feels seen, heard, and valued. We are partnering with you to grow and develop empathy in your student at home. As a family, use the activities in the link below to reflect on how to better understand and celebrate others to connect with heart.

What is Empathy?
Empathy is the ability to be aware of, understand, and be sensitive to another person’s feelings. Instead of focusing on how these feelings impact ourselves, empathy motivates us to focus on others and respond with care and compassion.
Students who successfully demonstrate empathy may show the following behaviors:
• Notices students who are left out and brings them in
• Pays attention and responds when a classmate is sad or upset
• Shares with other students in need
• Is able to see other people’s perspectives and not just their own
