5th Grade News

Mrs. Burmeister, Mrs. Millonzi, and Mr. Springer

Friday, September 4th

Welcome to Fifth Grade!

We are off to an awesome start! This week the teachers have been introducing the routines and all the new protocols to starting the school year. The teachers and students are getting to know each other, organizing materials, and beginning to start our learning for the year.

Below is a link to the fifth grade materials we would like each student to bring to school.

Essential Agreements

Fifth grade will be working hard to follow the Rose Glen "BE" statements this year, and each classroom created an anchor chart that each student was able to sign. Kids agreed to BE respectful, BE responsible, BE kind, and BE safe. As a class we discussed what this means in school and watched videos about how it looks too. Please know we are doing all we can to keep your student safe! We are off to a great start!!!

School Apps that Fifth Grade Will Be Using

Students will be using Blackboard, Google Classroom , and Notability this year. Blackboard is an app where kids will go to get their assignments. Notability is a writing and editing app , and Google Classroom is an app where kids will turn their assignments in. This week we have introduced these apps to the classroom.

Our Learning

The workshops for Reading, Writing and Math are being established. The district wide workshop model includes whole group mini lessons, small guided groups and application time for practice. The kids are doing a great job getting in these routines.

Our first unit in reading will focus on community, integrating social studies and literacy. We are in the process of learning about various communities around the world and what impacts them! "What impacts a community?" is the question we will be returning to throughout the unit. This will support writing in which we will investigate more about a topic we are familiar with and write an informational text.

Science - Water Walk is Coming!

In our first unit, we will be learning about the environment and focusing on the importance of clean water. The classes will be going on a neighborhood water walk next week, more information will be forthcoming, but we need your help. We need each student to bring in an empty 1 gal. plastic jug with cap by next Thursday, Sept 10. Please label the jug with your student's name.

Fifth Grade Math

Unit 1 will be the launch unit and the learning focus is place value and number concepts.

Family Newsletter

The SDW Parent Math Site has been updated. This is a very comprehensive Kgn. through fifth grade site, so be sure to take a few minutes to view it.

School Counselor, Mrs. Edwards

Each month Mrs. Edwards, our school counselor, will be coming into the classroom to provide SEL lessons. This month the focus will be Listening with Empathy & Following Directions through Second Step Lessons.
