You’ve Been Jingled!
A Christmas game that brings JOY. This year we would like ALL staff members to participate and spread some cheer to get us through the rest of the year.
Starting Friday, December 3rd- December 17th.
Directions:
Everyone should have received a Santa tag with a staff members name. You will then gift the assigned staff member with a treat to make their day. Treats can be anything you would like (cookies, candy, popcorn, etc. minimum of $1.50-$5.00).
If you decide not to participate, please drop off your Santa tag in the labeled box in the Main Office as soon as you can.
Don’t forget to place your Santa tag outside of your room, so we know who is getting JINGLED.
Let’s get into the holiday spirit Malabar!

Updates from our Intervention Coordinator-Lisa Martinez
Hello Teachers,
As we prepare to administer DIBELS MOY let’s remember to plan instruction to help support success in the MAZE measure in grades 2-6.
MAZE: Reading Comprehension
MAZE assesses a student’s ability to construct meaning from text. This measure serves as an overall indicator of reading comprehension skills. It requires use of word recognition skills, prior knowledge, familiarity with syntax and morphology, and cause and effect reasoning skills.
General Instructional Recommendations
*Consider whether foundational literacy skills are impacting comprehension and address through instruction.
*Adjust instruction based on student literacy level by being more explicit and allowing more practice time.
*Reinforce comprehension skills and strategies within the context of oral language and other content area of instruction.
*Allow students to demonstrate understanding in multiple ways, such as diagrams and drawings.
*Categorize errors using semantic cueing analysis to target specific errors.
*Engage students in daily meaningful oral discussions and constructive conversations to analyze language structures, literacy knowledge, word study, verbal reasoning, etc.
Notes from our Intervention Coordinator-Vanessa Chavez
I'm sure we are all on count down mode....2 MORE WEEKS!! That also means 2 more weeks to hammer away at our Literacy Academy Groups. There has been growth with our students and the question many of us might have is whether to administer the MOY before or after our winter break? Dibels 8 MOY window is now open through February 11, 2022. I will be having a conversation with some teachers to get an idea when you would like to assess. To continue to meet our students needs in Reading, I will put a Fluency Progress Chart in your box to help motivate students to read and monitor their WPM during the break. If you would like passages along with that, let me know!
Break Through Challenge
Our 2nd grade students have been participating in a "Breakthrough Challenge. The Breakthrough Team (2nd grade teachers, Ms. Muro, Ms. Gutierrez, Ms. Martinez and myself) meet weekly to discuss Progress Monitoring results and what next steps need to take place to continue to meet their needs. 27 students that scored Well below in the BOY Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF) have been working hard for 8 weeks to meet their goal. Their goal is to read 15 more words in a minute than they did in the BOY. Of the 27 students, 15 scored 0 NWF in 1 minute. As of today, only 1 student scored 0. Woo-hoo! We have 2 more weeks to reach our goal... wish us luck!!
Reminders from our TSP Advisor-Juan Carrillo
Hello Malabar Teachers.
This week we kick off our School Experience Survey campaign. Last year our parent completion rate was only 38% so we have a lot of work to do. We will be campaigning outside at dismissal several times a week to promote the parent survey. We will also be rewarding the top 3 classes with the highest parent completion rates with a movie and popcorn celebration. (More info to come). Please share the parent survey links with your parents and we will do the same via connect ed messages. The deadline for parents is December 19th. Thank you and have a great week.

STEAM Ahead with our Instructional Coach-Angela Muro
OMG! We had an AMAZING turnout for STEAM Night! Kudos to Ms. Faulkner and Ms. Limón for incorporating a do-along activity. I think the bags of materials really piqued our kiddos’ interest which led to a huge number of attendees. Likewise, kudos to Ms. Cázares and Ms. Vargas for having their students give interesting and fun oral presentations! It’s important for our parents and students in other grades to see the rigor and language demands of 6th Grade. In addition, thank you to ALL of you teachers for promoting our event. In every classroom I visited, the students knew about STEAM Night and were looking forward to it. Way to go Malabar!
The bar has been set. Let’s put our heads together to keep the momentum going. Upcoming STEAM Nights are (take note, dates have changed):
Feb. 3rd – 4th Grade
Mar. 3rd - 5th Grade
Apr. 7th – Kinder
May 5th – Open House (Don’t sweat this one. Ms. Gutierrez and I spoke about it most likely not happening in person. This means you do not have to wait until the end of April to put your Open House together. You might want to capture some of each IIS Unit and put it together later. Just a thought.)
Finally, check your email for agendas and schedules for our ½ day PD’s on Dec. 8-10. As always, if you have any questions or need any support, please shoot me an email or come by Room 5.

Self Care Tip:
This holiday season might not feel as festive as others and bring about mixed emotions, be mindful of how you are feeling, check-in with yourself, and purposely schedule time for self care: ie. Decorating, DIY arts & Crafts, Creating a gratitude list, Movie night.
Updates from our Primary Promise Teacher-Katie Chenu
There is a growing body of evidence that suggests that we educators need to rethink the way we teach math facts. Take a few minutes during your planning time this week to watch this short video and read this highly influential article from Jo Boaler on teaching fluency without fear.

Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
As we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questionsEffective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
Focus for Next Week
We will continue our focus on Math.
