Stephen Decatur Elementary September 6, 2019
The Principal's Message
September is upon us already!
We are working hard in all areas at Stephen Decatur. Throughout August, we focused on school expectations, spirit, safety, and academic goals. We even had our first big storm. Thank you all for your patience during that stressful time as we worked to keep scholars safe.
Expectations: At Stephen Decatur we are Responsible, Safe, and Respectful
Spirit: We started an Inspiration Hall where quotes are displayed that remind scholars of their importance and worth. Every day, a student in each grade level receives a Brag Tag when they are Caught Being Good. Check out our Twitter or Facebook page to see their daily pictures. We are designing a new logo and will have spiritwear available for purchase soon. Finally, we fancied up some lunch tables for you to enjoy lunch with your children when able.
Safety: Each month we have a fire drill and a Run, Hide, Fight drill. In August, we also practiced severe weather drills.
Academic Goals: Throughout August, scholars took reading and math assessments. The results are used to create growth goals for each student. Students will now work to grow in each area and will be recognized for progress.

School Smiles
School Smiles is a dental program that is coming to our school on SEPTEMBER 17th. Forms will be going home this week. Please return them asap. The form will allow follow up treatment throughout the year.
Flu Shots
Flu shots will be back again this year on October 3rd, beginning at 8:00 A.M. Health Heroes will be stopping at each school on this day.
There is no cost!
Parents fill out the appropriate insurance section and Health Heroes will bill the insurance for the vaccine. If it is not covered by insurance, they DO NOT ask for payment for any services. They accept non insured students as well. Health Heroes just asks that if you mark that you have insurance, provide the information.
The consent forms are linked below. They will also be coming home with students.
Indianapolis Public Library Partnership
Decatur Township has entered into a partnership with the Indianapolis Public Library. Through this partnership, every year we provide the library with a list of our students, and they match the list with their database of patrons. If a student does not currently have a library card, they will be issued one. This program has been very successful in our schools and in other districts in Indianapolis.
The special card students receive will give them access to all of the library’s digital materials, such as databases of magazine and journal articles, downloadable ebooks, emagazines and audio books. In addition, it will give them very limited access to physical items, such as regular books. Of course, you can change this to a full access card by visiting your library. This is an outstanding opportunity for your student. If for any reason you do not wish for your child to participate, please contact our school office for paperwork to opt out.
Any questions or concerns about the program can be directed to Lynn Hodgkin, Elementary Media Coordinator, at 317-856-2221.
