A Note from our Nurse
Parents,
Spring is here and it’s time to shift our thinking from winter coats and gloves to combatting those outside pests and protecting our skin. Mosquito bites and sunburns are common reasons to visit the school nurse at this time of year. You can reduce the chance of bug bites and sunburn for your children by applying bug repellent and sunscreen before outside play/games and before school. Furthermore, you can prolong the effect of the bug repellent by applying it to their clothes. By taking proactive steps, you’re helping to protect your children from potential exposure. Outside recess is an important facet in your child’s day. Allowing them an opportunity in the sunshine for Vitamin D production and exercise is good for the development of their bodies and minds. Help them enjoy this free time with a few moments in the morning spent applying these protective measures and begin teaching them the importance of protecting themselves against sun burns and bug bites. Please do NOT send bug spray to school. Bug repellents must be treated as medications according to the Texas State guidelines. Mosquitos are most active in the morning and at dusk so applying before school is adequate. Below is a link to helpful tips from the CDC and GCISD.

Below is a link from the city of Grapevine detailing what you can do around your property to help protect against mosquitos. While the Zika and West Nile Viruses remain concerns, the city of Grapevine is taking measures to reduce mosquito numbers and individuals need to take precautions while outside.
