Year 5 Newsletter
Term 1 - Friday 27th October
Welcome to the Year 5 Newsletter
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 5th edition of the Year 5 newsletter! We hope to see many of you tonight for our annual PTA Halloween BBQ!
Unit of Inquiry
How the World Works
Central Idea: Energy may be converted from one form to another and stored in various ways to enhance human progress.
Lines of inquiry
• Form - Different forms of energy sources (renewable and non-renewable)
• Change - How energy is used (transformation)
• Perspective - Sustainable energy practices (progress)
We are now fully immersed in all things energy! The children have been singing along with Mr Edmond's ''Energy Song'' to find out about energy transfer and its different forms and then applying this knowledge to complete sorting activities. We have also been using the book "Until I Met Dudley" to act out energy transfer and processes in small groups to great effect. We have also been using Makey Makey software to connect everyday objects to our laptops to create drumkits, which embedded our understanding of circuits. 5I and the second half of 5W will be the last of the cohort to visit Castle Peak Power Station this week to consolidate our understanding of how electricity is generated and transmitted to people's homes in Hong Kong.

Maths
Our new maths topic for Number is Addition and Subtraction.
The key objectives are to:
- solve addition and subtraction problems using decimals in the form of money and measurement.
- Solve problems (including real life and word) involving multiplication of large numbers by one- or two-digit numbers using efficient mental and written strategies.
Use efficient mental and written strategies for addition and subtraction.
Strand
We have started our new unit focusing on shape and space. Our main unit objective for this week is to :
- Use mathematical vocabulary to describe 2D and 3D shape
To assess the children's current level of understanding, we undertook The Great Shape Hunt around the school to find, and photograph, examples of different shapes and then created a Google slide presentation to share and explain our findings.
Children can also support their learning in the classroom by completing the Mathletics or Study Ladder activities online.

English
Our second unit in English is Report Writing, with a particular focus on science instructions. The children will continue to develop skills from verbal instructions of familiar tasks, and will then begin identifying the language features and structure of an instruction text from reading and discussing example texts. They have started improving examples of instructions texts and are beginning to write their own simple instructions for Character Strength Chatterboxes.
Our spelling focus for this two week unit is 'able' words. Children have logged their words to learn in their green spelling log books, so please do make sure these get a look and practise over the weekend.

Mindfulness Matters
If your child is experiencing an intense emotion, please remind them:
1. Not to suppress it.
2. Not to get carried away by it.
3. Be kind to themselves.
4. To give themselves what it is that they feel they need until the feeling changes.
We can't make a thunderstorm go away but we can take shelter until it passes.
