Kiwanis Club Sponsors B.U.G. Awards for Mentone Elementary
Our local Kiwanis Club is sponsoring the B.U.G. Program this year at MES. B.U.G., or Bringing Up Grades, is a national Kiwanis program to motivate student achievement. At the end of the second nine weeks, teachers will identify students that raised classroom grades. If a student raises a grade in just one subject, he or she will be a B.U.G Award winner! Certificates for the 2nd nine weeks award winners will be presented on January 23rd at the Friday Morning LIVE celebration. Each 9 weeks that a student achieves a B.U.G Award, he or she has a chance to win a bicycle at an end of the year drawing. The bicycles are also sponsored by our Kiwanis Club and are currently displayed in our front show case. Please encourage your child to raise his or her grades and thank a Kiwanis member for supporting our achievement here at Mentone Elementary School.
Mentone Elementary is Recyling Bottle Caps
The Mentone Student Council is collecting plastic bottle caps to recycle them into a bench for the school. All plastic caps that do not contain metal can be used for the bench project. To make each bench it takes 400 pounds of plastic lids and caps. The group is hoping to collect enough plastic for two benches that will be used outside of the school. Please collect those caps and lids and bring them to Mentone so that they can be recycled.
Mentone Elementary Collects over 7,500 lbs of Food!
The Mentone Elementary Student Council just completed a food drive that will provide over 7,500 pounds of food to people in our community. The food was collected over a two week period and then donated to the Helping Hands Food Bank. Mentone students brought in donations of non-perishable foods and money to contribute to the totals. The student council set a goal of 3,500 pounds and we SHATTERED that goal! Because this school wide goal was met, the entire school will receive a special treat. Thank you to the Student Council for organizing the drive and thank you to our school community for supporting this very worthy cause.

Holiday House December 13, 2014
Mentone Elementary School will be hosting Holiday House on Saturday December 13, 2014. The Holiday House is an event where families can come in and shop for gently used Christmas gift items. Donations are being accepted now for the Holiday House. We have a need for gently used children’s clothing, all sizes, and new or gently used toys. There is a donation box in the Mentone Elementary foyer or you can contact the school if you have a large donation and need to make special drop off arrangements. Many Mentone families will benefit from this event.
Winter Coats Needed For Recess
The seasons have definitely changed and we have a number of students that are not wearing coats out to recess. Please encourage your child to wear warm outerwear that meets the weather of the day. We also have a growing number of coats being left in lost and found. If your child has misplaced a coat, please have them check the lost and found items in the cafeteria. If you stop by the school you can also check the lost and found box. Students will go out to recess unless the wind chill temperature drops below 10 degrees. Please make sure that your student has a coat, gloves, hat and other winter attire suitable to play outside.
