What is Body dysmorphic disorder?

Body dysmorphic disorder(BDD) is a mental illness involving obsessive focus on perceived flaw in appearance. About one percent of the United States population has this mental disorder.


Signs and symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder include:

  • Preoccupation with your physical appearance with extreme self-consciousness(Physical Symptom)

  • Strong belief that you have an abnormality or defect in your appearance that makes you ugly(Emotional Symptom)

  • Avoidance of social situations( Social Symptom)

  • Comparison of your appearance with that of others(Behavioral Symptom)


Cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT) is a form of psychotherapy. It was originally designed to treat depression, but is now used for a number of mental disorders. It works to solve current problems and change unhelpful thinking and behavior.
