NEWS FROM THE HEO

HIGHER EDUCATION OFFICE UPDATES - 6 SEPTEMBER 2013

Dear Students and Parents,

It has been a busy start of term for both our Year 12 and Year 13 Students!

YEAR 13's

Students applying to Oxbridge have almost completed their admission essays and the applications will be submitted within the next two weeks. Although the official deadline is Tuesday, October 15, the HEO spends a great deal of time gathering information from subject teachers to write the university recommendation and preparing all the necessary documentation.

The feedback from all admissions officers all points to the fact that earlier applications are more competitive – the earlier students submit their applications the more likely they will be offered a place.

Other early deadlines coming up:

UK Medicine – Friday 13 September

US Early Decision/Early Action – Friday 11 October

HKU Fast Track – Wednesday 23 October

University of California System – Friday 1 November

YEAR 12's

This is an important time for researching and learning about different options and systems. Remember to keep an open mind – it is important for students to understand the wide range of opportunities that are on offer before making an informed decision of which country they wish to study in and which major they decide to pursue.

Presentation by HKU

Students in Year 12 will begin this whole research process by attending a presentation on the University of Hong Kong this afternoon at DC. HKU is becoming a popular destination for all ESF students and has recently been ranked as Number 1 University in Asia.

Presentation by Durham University

On Monday 9 September at 2.20pm (Block 6) all Year 12 students will attend a presentation, in the Theatre, by Professor Crowder from Durham University who will give an overview of the UCAS system and outline the benefits and procedures of applying to UK universities.

Presentation by University of British Columbia (UBC)

On Monday 23 September at 3.15pm, Mr Sven Clarke, Senior Admissions Officer from UBC will be talking to year 12 students, in the DP Common Room, 4/F, about the Canadian education system and the many opportunities that Canadian universities have to offer in terms of majors and co-op programmes.

SATs

For students applying to the US, the SATs can play an important role. The HEO advises any Year 12 Student who is thinking of applying to US universities to start preparing now – it is never too early. There are many good SAT prep courses on the market and for students looking for a personal one-to-one tailor made programme, we highly recommend you to explore ArborBridge.
