IEP Mediation & Facilitation
March 7th at 6:30 PM on Zoom
Presented by the Bureau of Special Education Appeals (BSEA)
Join the Watertown SEPAC for an informational session about IEP facilitation and mediation. The session will be presented by a representative of the Bureau of Special Education Appeals (BSEA)*.
Often families and school districts are able to work collaboratively and develop IEPs and 504s to meet the needs of their students; however when they reach an impasse, it can be frustrating, upsetting, and sometimes leave the parties wondering how to move forward.
This interactive presentation will give a general overview of the BSEA mediation and facilitation processes, the roles of Mediators and Facilitators, how to prepare for mediation, what to expect from BSEA mediation/facilitation, etc.
This session is open and free to all!!!
* The Bureau of Special Education Appeals’ Mediators/Facilitators aim to be accessible and approachable and this informational session is open to ANYONE who wants to learn more about their services.
What is Mediation?
Special Education Mediation is a voluntary and confidential dispute resolution process available at no cost through the BSEA. When school personnel and parents disagree about the educational needs of a student with disabilities, either party may request mediation.
In mediation, an impartial mediator helps parents and school staff clarify the issues and underlying concerns, explore interests, discuss options and collaborate to reach mutually satisfactory agreements that address the needs of the student. The mediator does not decide how to resolve the dispute. When the parties resolve all or some of the issues, they work together with the mediator to put their agreement(s) in writing.
This informal, collaborative problem-solving process encourages mutual respect, promotes communication and often provides the basis for positive working relationships between parents and school staff.
